Definition

Definition: Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager primarily assigned to River People Health Center (RPHC). This job class is treated as FLSA Exempt.

Essential Functions: Essential functions may vary among positions and may include the following tasks, knowledge, abilities, skills and other characteristics. Examples of Tasks

Tasks:

  1. Direct Care: Performs nursing assessments and screenings.
  • Obtains and documents health histories.
  • Initiates patient education efforts and preventative health measures within scope of practice for professional registered nurse.
  • Carries out medical provider orders.
  • Initiates appropriate interventions according to health care priorities identified in conjunction with primary care provider.
  • Administers medication as prescribed by physician or nurse practitioner.
  • Monitors medications and determines efficacy of medications, side effects and drug interactions.
  • Provides medication education to patients.
  • Assists with HHS employee health efforts including annual influenza vaccination clinic.
  • Participates as a member of multi-disciplinary consultation and review teams including case assignments.
  1. Administration:Assures adherence to established policies, procedures and standing orders.
  • Assists as needed with the coordination of all health related appointments and referrals.
  • Coordinates health care aspect of patients if they transition to another facility, hospital, treatment center or other.
  • Documents accurately, legibly and completely in Electronic Health Record (EHR), patient charts. Includes subjective and objective data, treatment provided, evaluation of treatment effectiveness and patient education provided.
  • Develops and documents nursing care plans and interdisciplinary treatment plans.
  • Establishes and maintains documentation and communication flow between staff at Salt River Clinic
  • Appraises quality and effectiveness of documentation, education materials and equipment periodically and makes recommendations to clinic leadership for change when necessary.
  • Follows through to ensure that agreed upon changes are implemented and maintained.
  • Maintains program data.
  • Prepares and submits required reports as needed.
  • Participates in case staffing as required.
  1. Miscellaneous: Performs other duties as assigned to maintain and enhance the health care program and Department of Health and Human Services service operation.
  • Maintains professional knowledge and proficiency in nursing through continuing education, staff meetings, training and conferences, etc.

  • Knowledge of theory, principles and scope of practice for a professional registered nurse.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and agency laws and regulations governing professional nursing practice.
  • Knowledge of health systems.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging issues in Public Health.
  • Knowledge of disease processes.
  • Knowledge of data collection and analysis.
  • Knowledge of theory and practices of management in nursing services.
  • Knowledge of assessment, preventative and therapy procedures in a correctional setting.
  • Knowledge of counseling theory and techniques plus learning principles and strategies.
  • Knowledge of medical, public health and social service resources available to Native Americans including, but not limited to, Indian Health Service, Medicare, Medicaid, ALTCS, SSI, etc.
  • Knowledge of public health practices and concerns.
  • Knowledge of history, culture, laws, rules, customs and traditions of the Salt River Pima-MaricopaIndian Community.
  • Skill assessing client needs and developing care plans.
  • Skill observing, assessing and documenting patient behavior and progress.
  • Skill with verbal and written communication and ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people and health professionals.
  • Skill maintaining accurate records and compiling timely reports.
  • Skill performing emergency medical procedures including first aid and Basic Cardiac Life Support.
  • Skill applying professional nursing methods and techniques.
  • Skill applying and interpreting federal, state, and agency laws and regulations governing professional nursing practices.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, subordinates, supervisors, health care professionals, Tribal officials and representatives of resource agencies.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Ability to incorporate cultural differences, health beliefs and learning styles.
  • Ability to identify and address programmatic problems.
  • Ability to collect, analyze, report and use data.
  • Ability to develop and implement program protocols.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and meet HIPPA requirements
  • Ability to operate a variety of standard office equipment including cellular phones, photocopiers, FAX machines, calculators and personal computers.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education and Experience: An Associate Degree or Bachelor's in Science Degree, in Nursing from an accredited college or university and certification as a Registered Nurse(RN) required.
  • Arizona Registered Nurse license required.
  • Experience working with Native American Communities preferred.
  • Experience working in a health clinic as a Registered Nurse preferred.
  • Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education and experience that will allow the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job may be considered.

Special Requirements

  • May be required to work beyond normal business hours including nights, weekends and holidays.
