The Erich Lindemann Mental Health Center seeks an energetic, flexible nurse for the role of Registered Nurse for the Lindemann Inn Shelter. The preferred candidate has experience with clients with serious, persistent mental illness, substance abuse and/or who have experienced homelessness, and has strong nursing and crisis management skills. Must be able to work collaboratively with shelter guests, staff and multi-disciplinary teams in a challenging, fast-paced environment.

The Lindemann Inn is looking for a full time Registered Nurse IV to join our Shelter Leadership Team. The Lindemann Inn provides transitional shelter to persons served by the DMH Metro Boston Area and is located at 25 Staniford St, Boston.

The primary role of the Shelter Nurse is to interface with persons' served, his/her/their providers, and shelter staff to ensure a smooth, safe transition in and out of the shelter environment. The Shelter Nurse is responsible for ongoing medical assessment and crisis intervention, as needed in the shelter setting. The preferred candidate is familiar with the DPH's Medication Administration Program (MAP) and has experience with MAP training.

The Shelter Nurse is responsible for the training and development of shelter staff, specifically MAP protocols and guidance on acute medical issues. The ideal candidate for this position has a knowledge base of insurance, community resources, and medical comorbidities faced by our persons served. We are looking for an experienced professional that has an ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment, while also effectively communicating and collaborating with the shelter's leadership team and outside providers. This position is flexible with scheduling to meet both the candidate's needs and the program's needs.

Acts as licensed medical supervisor for the 60-bed co-ed shelter and 20 bed all female shelter at the Eric Lindemann Mental Health Center. Provides direct nursing and treatment care to the ELMHC shelter guests during assigned shift. Provides oversight regarding client medical crisis assessment, evaluation, and implementation of emergency procedures. Ensure that the medication rooms in both 24-hour shelters are properly following all MAP protocols and procedures and participates in all MAP reviews.

Responsibilities include (These duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):

  • Serve as RN at the Lindemann Inns (co ed unit and women's unit), providing oversight for 80 DMH shelter guests.

  • Oversees all three shifts employed at both DMH shelters as licensed medical supervisor regarding MAP compliance and safety.

  • Provides direct nursing care including medication administration, taking vital signs, doing scheduled treatments, and counseling the shelter clients.

  • Assist with Boston Healthcare for the Homeless' weekly clinic, including taking vital signs, finger stick monitoring for diabetes management and acting according to physicians' orders.

  • Ensures that safety and emergency procedures are known and followed by shelter staff, VNAs, HHAs etc.

  • Reviews new referrals and identifies relevant medical history.

  • Coordinates with referral sources to coordinate transition of medications and nursing services.

  • Supports coordination of client discharges by facilitating VNA referrals, as needed.

  • Establishes and maintains a nursing assessment for each client.

  • Identifies, evaluates, and responds to changes in client's condition with the correct medical and therapeutic response.

  • Collaborates with clinical leadership, VNA, and referring agencies to ensure shelters are operating in line with current medical standards and that programming offered is responsive to identified need.

  • Ensures compliance with DPH regulations including MAP audits.

  • Attends and participates in all relevant meetings conducted by shelter leadership, DMH administration, risk reviews as indicated.

  • Provides liaison and consultation with collateral providers regarding client issues, both psychiatric and medical.

  • May conduct COVID-19 testing and training for staff and clients.

  • May coordinate COVID-19 services, including testing and vaccine clinics.

Required Qualifications

  • Awareness of the principles and practices of nursing.

  • Knowledge of standard nursing policies, procedures, methods and techniques.

  • Knowledge of the methods and procedures used in infection control.

  • Ability to maintain accurate, up to date, records on all clients.

  • Knowledge of reviewing monthly nursing progress notes for all clients.

  • Knowledge of orientation of new staff.

  • Knowledge of establishing a primary nursing model of operations.

  • Knowledge of MAP procedures and protocols.

  • Knowledge of training methods and techniques.

  • Ability to plan and conduct training or instruction.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Given the population served, bilingual or multilingual fluency.

  • Experience with the aging population (i.e. nursing home facilities)

Please Note: The schedule is Monday- Friday, 7a-3p, with flexibility for telework. Employees in this position will be required to perform mandatory overtime.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility and (B) of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory, administrative or managerial capacity or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

I. A Graduate degree with a major in Nursing may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.

  • No substitutions will be allowed for the required (B) experience.

  • Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS IN SERIES: Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.*

  • Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination. Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.
