General Summary:

Under limited supervision, the patient care clinician - Cardiac Cath Lab Registered Nurse, is responsible for the assessment and

monitoring of patients undergoing cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology studies, pacemaker implantations, and other designated

procedures performed in the cardiac catheterization laboratory. Additional duties include assisting the physician with procedures, and

patient education and preparation prior to the procedure as well as after the procedure.

Clinicians are members of the cardiac cath care team and have accountability to function as a team in order to accomplish patient

outcomes as identified by established pathways. The patient care clinician is a professional care giver who assumes responsibility and

accountability for care given to patients undergoing cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology studies, pacemaker implantations, or other

designated procedures performed in the cardiac catheterization laboratory, while the patient remains in the cath lab or in the patient

recovery area. The clinician, working as a member of the health care team, provides care according to established standards. Patients

served include adults and adult geriatrics.

Reporting Relationships

Reports to the Administrative Director of Cardiac Catheterization. Job requires a limited level of supervision. Functions under the

direction of the Administrative Director of Cardiac Catheterization and the medical director of the Cardiac Cath Lab.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Currently licensed as an RN in the state of Maryland.

    Two (2) or more years of recent coronary care or intensive care experience is required. One to two (1-2) years of cardiac catheterization experience is preferred. Must show desire to take on responsibility.

    BLS is required. ACLS is strongly preferred.

Working Conditions:

Variable working environment exists. Lighting ranging from well to dimly lit.

Temperature of the environment is kept cool. Prolonged

observation of video display and computer monitors. Work is fast paced and high energy demand. Potential for prolonged exposure to X-Rays requiring strict adherence to radiation safety guidelines, including correct wearing of protective lead apparel, monitoring of film

badges and adherence to pregnancy policies. Potential for regular exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials, requiring

the observance of Standard (Universal) precautions and safe handling practices. Expected to workday shift, including some weekends as

necessary. Will be required to rotate on-call for evenings, nights, weekends and holidays as necessary for the safe and efficient

functioning of the cardiac cath lab. Will be exposed to frequent interruptions and multiple crisis situations.

Physical Requirements:

  • Standing, walking, lifting of patients, stretching throughout most of the work day (5-7 hours per day). Requires pushing pulling, transferring and maneuvering stretchers with or without ancillary equip0ment, occasionally with the assistance of others. Patients may weigh in excess of 250 pounds. Extensive standing while wearing protective lead apparel for most of work day (4-6 hours per day).

  • Visual acuity required for reading video and computer monitors, fluoroscopy monitors, regarding patient charts, working in dimly lit Cath lab for 5-7 hours/day. Acute hearing and verbal communication skills to receive and deliver accurate information while wearing face masks throughout the procedure (approximately 4-6 hours per day). Manual dexterity for assisting with procedures and using computer keyboard (4-6 hours per day).
