GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: To provide professional nursing care and treatment to inmates in the Adult Correctional Institutions; to assess clients' needs and plan, develop, implement and evaluate nursing care and treatment programs; and to do related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the general supervision; work is subject to review and evaluation for compliance with instructions, professional nursing standards and practices.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Plans, monitors and evaluates the activities of licensed practical nurses and ancillary unit personnel engaged in providing nursing and /or health care services to inmates and staff.

  • To provide professional nursing services within the Department of Corrections.

  • To conduct nursing interviews, assess and formulate nursing diagnoses, and to set clinical nursing goals for clients.

  • To interpret nursing and health care needs of inmates to other members of inmates to other members of the interdisciplinary team.

  • To provide medical and nursing therapies, health care instructions and counseling to inmates and families.

  • To provide in-service education to departmental health care staff.

  • To participate in educational, quality assurance and research activities.

  • To continually monitor the health status of clients and to modify their nursing care plans as the need arises.

  • To monitor clients' mental health status and make referrals to mental health staff as indicated.

  • To provide intravenous therapy as directed by the physician including; starting the IV, maintaining an IV infusion pump if appropriate, determining and monitoring the flow rate, administering IV medications and other clinical actions appropriate to intravenous therapy.

  • To administer IV, IV-push and Z-track medications as ordered by physician.

  • To administer and monitor total parenteral nutrition (TPN).

  • T provide suctioning as indicated, including tracheostomy, deep nasal pharyngeal and oral suctioning.

  • To provide routine tracheostomy care.

  • To insert GI (Gastrointestinal) tubes as directed by physician and to provide and monitor GI feedings if appropriate (internal feedings, both intermittent and continuous).

  • To change dressings on wounds involving multiple tissue layers and to irrigate communicating wounds as ordered by physician.

  • To respond to emergency codes anywhere in the institution, assess injuries and provide first aid to inmates and staff.

  • To safeguard institution keys and to lock and unlock secured clinical areas including exam rooms, storage areas, medicine closets and related areas.

  • To make observations and report any unusual activities of inmate patients or other inmates in the facility.

  • To supervise the feeding of meals to patients and instruct or direct inmates to ensure security is maintained.

  • To read and follow instructions, manuals, physician's orders, the Physician's Desk Reference and related material.

  • To keep records and make reports.

  • To participate in continuing nursing education programs, workshops, seminars and conferences.

  • To do related work as required.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND CAPACITIES: A thorough knowledge of current approved registered nursing practices, methods, procedures and techniques; the ability to read and comprehend complex and technical instructions, manuals and related information; the ability to instruct or direct LPN's or other health service staff; the ability to provide in-service training to health care providers; the ability to follow oral instructions; the ability to maintain records and prepare reports; and related abilities and capacities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Education: Such as may have been gained through: graduation from a registered nursing program in an accredited school of nursing.

Experience: Such as may have been gained through: employment as a registered nurse in an institution hospital or similar care facility providing nursing care and treatment.

Or, any combination of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the above education and experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: The following condition of employment must be met at the time of appointment: Must possess a valid unrestricted license as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island, and maintain such licensure as a condition of employment.

Assignments are received in detail and are reviewed in process or upon completion.</p><p>SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None</p><ul><li><p>To cultivate internal intelligence networks of confidential informants to gather information on dangerous or illegal activities.</p></li><li><p>To gather intelligence data based on inmate movement and informant information, and to develop and maintain a central intelligence file for the Department</p></li><li><p>To prepare detailed written reports regarding inmate activities, security violations, ongoing or completed investigations, and related topics.</p></li><li><p>To review records, logs, reports and related data to ensure the maintenance of proper protocols and to identify potential security and safety breaches.</p></li><li><p>To pursue and apprehend escapees in the community, and to maintain contact with local law enforcement agencies to coordinate searches and investigations.</p></li><li><p>To store and keep a log of evidence and contraband, and ensure chain of custody is maintained.</p></li><li><p>To examine interior walls, cells, eating facilities, shop areas, exercise rooms, health care facilities, and other interior building areas utilized by inmates of the Adult Correctional Institutions, to ensure they are safe and secure.</p></li><li><p>To investigate information regarding potential breaches of security, conveyance of contraband, or any other possible threat to prison security created by inmates.</p></li><li><p>To examine exterior walls, fences, grounds, and work areas to ensure they conform to acceptable measures of security, and to detect and prevent the transference of contraband to the interior of the correctional facilities.</p></li><li><p>To conduct regular and random searches of various areas of the institution; and to take unscheduled inmate counts.</p></li><li><p>To monitor inmate movement and activity to identify possible violations of Department regulations.</p></li><li><p>To provide testimony at discipline or parole board hearings, or in courts of law.</p></li><li><p>To assist other law enforcement agencies to developing criminal and civil cases.</p></li><li><p>To interview inmates, visitors, and staff to gather information related to the functions of the security team.</p></li><li><p>To keep logs, records and files of activities, investigations, and other information pertinent to institutional security.</p></li><li><p>To identify and report possible sanitary violations and to initiate corrective measures as necessary.</p></li><li><p>To perform related duties as required.</p></li></ul><p>KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND CAPACITIES: Knowledge of the principles and practices of modern penology; knowledge of the security standards and protocols of adult correctional facilities housing the full range of inmate classifications; knowledge of physical defense techniques; knowledge of the proper use and handling of firearms and non-lethal defense gear; familiarity with investigatory, and search and seizure techniques; skill in writing clear and concise reports; the ability to maintain order among inmates; the ability to conduct investigations; the ability to effectively cull dangerous inmate activity; the ability to create and keep detailed records and logs; the ability to present cogent verbal testimony; and related skills and abilities</p><p>EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:</p><p>Education: Such as may have been gained through: graduation from a senior high school; and</p><p>Experience: Such as may have been gained through: employment in a position of the kind and level of a correctional officer in an adult correctional facility;</p><p>Or: any combination of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the above education and experience.</p><p>SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  Must have completed the Rhode Island Department of Corrections Training Academy Program for Correctional Officers, or an equivalent program.</p><br> State Of Rhode Island Cranston RI
