Duties

Summary

The RN provides care to an Inpatient population on a Psychiatric Inpatient Unit under Patient Care Services within the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center. This unit provides care to veterans with acute psychiatric illness. The patient population ranges from young adult to geriatric. Common diagnoses include: depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder as well as dual diagnoses. The RN is accountable as a primary nurse for a defined group of patients and may function as charge nurse.
Responsibilities

He/she collaborates with members of the interdisciplinary treatment team and ancillary services to plan and implement the veteran's plan of care, provides patient teaching as appropriate. Analyzes and upgrades patient care through quality improvement activities.

Monitors activities occurring within the unit when acting in the charge nurse capacity. Strives to maintain clinical competencies through continuous study. In-services and participation in obtaining continuing education units.

Based on education and experience, may be assigned responsibilities as preceptor. Responsible for assignments of GS staff (LPNs CNAs).

Work Schedule: Possible shifts 11:00pm-7:30am, 7:00am-3:30pm, 3:00pm-11:30pm, Days will rotate and include weekends and holidays. Shifts will be discussed during the interview.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education . In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Preferred Experience: Experience in inpatient mental health nursing preferred.

Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements:
Moderate lilting (I 5-44 Ibs): reaching above shoulder; walking (4 hours); standing (1 hours); use of ringers: both hands required: both legs required; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; both eyes required; hearing (aid permitted): hearing without aid: working closely with others: working alone: working as a team during physical management of a disruptive patient: function with skill and ability during emergent situations like code green. code gray, and code blue.

We invite you to contact us in regard to a position as a Registered Nurse at the Riverview Vascular Access Center located at 7633 East Jefferson Avenue, Suite 330, Detroit, MI 48214. In this position, you will be responsible for providing high-quality nursing care to patients undergoing vascular access procedures under conscious sedation. In this role, you will gather pretreatment patient data, monitor patient and medications during procedures, maintain prescription drug logs, and provide assistance to the vascular access team during pre- and post-procedure activity. As a member of our team, you will interact with patients, physicians and dialysis facilities as part of our community educational program, and also participate in other educational outreach initiatives. Lifeline Vascular Care works with premier physician practices to develop and manage outpatient centers that provide focused and coordinated vascular access procedures to patients receiving hemodialysis treatment for end-stage renal disease (ESRD).
