Job Summary

The Registered Nurse assesses and assists in providing for health and nursing needs of Anchorage School District students. The RN conducts a continuous assessment of the student's health and development status; develops and executes a plan of care in coordination with the student's family and physician and the school staff. The RN may provide clinical supervision to both licensed and unlicensed personnel. The RN reports to the nurse coordinator or director of Healthcare Services. The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).

Job Requirements

The following are required:

  • A state of Alaska registered nurse license certification, or a state of AK temporary nursing license.

  • Passing score on the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX).

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

  • Must be able to apply the standards of clinical nursing practice as the basis for accountability and direction. The standards of care include assessment, nursing diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation.

  • Must be able to apply a clinical knowledge base for decision-making in nursing and intervene in serious situations that arise suddenly and threaten the life or welfare of a student.

  • Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents, and staff.

  • Must be able to use effective expressive and receptive verbal skills, reflective of both articulate speech and good listening skills.

The following is preferred:

  • Two years of experience as a registered nurse.

Essential Job Functions

  • Protects and promotes student health, facilitates optimal development, and advances academic success.

  • Provides high quality student-centered care.

  • Collects and analyzes pertinent data and information relative to the student's health or the situation to determine actual or potential diagnoses, problems, and issues.

  • Identifies expected outcomes for a nursing plan individualized to the student or the situation.

  • Develops, implements and evaluates a nursing plan that prescribes strategies to attain expected, measurable outcomes.

  • Coordinates care delivery with parents, staff and providers

  • Provides nursing services including:

  • Interpreting health history and develop appropriate care plan

  • Immunization status review

  • Treatments

  • Medication

  • Diabetes and seizure management

  • Health counseling

  • Linkage with community providers

  • Health promotion

  • Injury and disease prevention, intervention, and education

  • Provides skilled nursing procedures within the standards of clinical nursing practice:

  • Feeding: nasogastric feeding, gastrostomy feeding, nasogastric tube insertion, nasogastric tube removal, gastrostomy tube reinsertion, machine troubleshooting and maintenance for continuous pump feeding.

  • Catheterization: clean intermittent catheterization, sterile catheterization, Crede, external catheter care, and care of indwelling catheter.

  • Medical Support Systems: ventricular peritoneal shunt, mechanical ventilator, phrenic nerve pacing, continuous and intermittent oxygen, medical machine troubleshooting and maintenance.

  • Medications: oral, injection, intravenous, epi-pen allergy kit, inhalation, topical, per nasogastric tube, per gastrostomy tube, per nebulizer, and special medication mixing procedures.

  • Ostomies: ostomy care, and ostomy irrigation.

  • Respiratory Assistance: postural drainage, percussion, pharyngeal and tracheotomy suctioning, tracheotomy tube replacement, tracheotomy care, peak flow meter, and manual bag resuscitation.

  • Screenings: monitors vital signs.

  • Specimen Testing: blood glucose.

  • Other Healthcare Procedures: seizure monitoring, soaks, dressings, position changes for skin pressure releases, and range of motion.

  • Development of Protocols: health care plans, treatment and emergency protocols with physician and school nurse consultation.

  • Communicates clearly and professionally in writing and speaking, including good listening skills.

  • Works in an environment that may cause exposure to infectious diseases.

  • Performs other duties to meet healthcare needs of students and staff as needed or assigned.

Physical /Mental Demands

The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

Work Environment

Work is performed in a professional environment with a wide variety of individuals having differing functions, personalities and abilities, including working with diverse groups of people in a variety of different settings.

While performing the duties of this job the employee may be regularly exposed to a video display. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
