REGISTERED NURSE - SPECIAL NEEDS COORDINATOR

OVERVIEW

The purpose of this position is to assist the Director of Nursing with the effective and efficient operation of on-site health care services to ensure the well-being of trainees, guests, and employees of the Rocket Center, emphasizing careful and thorough review of health history information.

  • Adheres to organizational policies and applicable laws.

  • Coaches and encourages staff to support the mission and vision of the Center by action and example.

  • Serves as an effective role model to staff by demonstrating exemplary work ethic.

  • Completes special needs reports by reviewing health forms, supervising nursing staff, and communicating with parents, Aerospace and Food Services.

Position Duties

Medical Systems

  • Meet or exceed the standards for the safety, security, hygiene, and emotional welfare of participants that may generally be expected of a firm and judicious parent.

  • Ensure medicines are dispensed in accordance with prescriptions and parental guidelines and in an accurate and timely manner.

  • Meet or exceed industry and professional standards for administering first aid to trainees, guests, and employees of the Rocket Center.

  • Meet or exceed industry and professional standards for examination of trainees, guests, and employees with complaints of physical symptoms.

  • Ensure the accurate and timely preparation and distribution of documentation regarding exams, accident reports, medical records, etc.

  • Meet or exceed industry and professional standards for referring patients to hospital facilities for medical conditions that require treatment unavailable at the Rocket Center.

  • Ensure that the parents of trainees referred for medical treatment are well-informed of the trainees' medical condition.

  • Ensure the accurate and timely notification of parents if their child is medically discharged, injured, or ill.

  • Ensure Rocket Center employees are properly trained on health issues and medical procedures such as communicable diseases, first aid, emergency procedures, etc.

  • Respond to parents' questions and concerns promptly to ensure they are informed on how SPACECAMP will impact specific medical conditions.

  • Ensure the accurate completion of incoming medical forms and notify appropriate departments of any special requests and needs promptly and professionally.

  • Meet or exceed professional and industry standards for confidentiality of medical records and other related documentation.

  • Ensure the nursing office has adequate supplies necessary to conduct daily operations.

  • Meet or exceed legal and professional standards for storing medicines and prescriptions.

  • Ensure timely arrangement of transportation for trainees to and from hospital facilities.

  • Meet or exceed the expectations of the Director of Nursing for the accurate and timely completion of related tasks and assignments.

Nursing Organization and Staffing

  • Ensure that the Nursing staff receive timely, relevant, and appropriate training.

  • Ensure that the Nursing staff follows all Rocket Center policies and procedures and departmental guidelines.

  • Ensure that staffing schedules optimize productivity and comply with contractual obligations.

  • Ensure the accurate and timely completion of tasks assigned to the Nursing staff.

  • Meet or exceed the expectations of the Director of Nursing for the accurate and timely completion of related tasks and assignments.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education

  • Education: A B.S. Degree in Nursing is preferred, as well as a Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.

Required Experience

  • Experience: 2 - 4 years of experience in an emergency room or at least two years of experience in a clinic setting focusing on pediatric and adolescent practice with some supervisory experience (0-2 years) required or an equivalent combination of education or experience.

  • Must have excellent verbal communication skills to interact effectively with guests and employees.

  • Computer Experience: Must be able to use a 101 key keyboard and possess knowledge of DOS and Windows-based operating systems, including some basic associated software applications (e.g., word processing and spreadsheet).

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Physical Requirements

  • Walking and climbing (stairs) to access other buildings and departments.

  • Sitting for long periods (4-6 hours).

  • Carrying and lifting boxes and supplies weighing up to 30 pounds to waist height.

  • Bending and kneeling to store and retrieve supplies.

  • Sight, reading, feeling, wrist movements to administer medications and first aid, operate computer terminals, and examine a patient's condition.

  • Talking and hearing to communicate with patients, parents, and employees in person and over the telephone.

Eligibility Qualifications

  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.

  • Must have a valid Alabama Nursing License.

Environmental Factors

  • This position involves working in a climate-controlled clinical environment.

  • This position works in a confined area with other employees.

  • This position deals extensively with small children and parents, guests, and employees.

  • This position is subject to the hazards of the profession.

Expected Hours of Work

Space Camp operates daily and runs year-round. Shifts may vary.
