Responsibilities*

The Adult Bariatric Surgery Program is seeking a full-time Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) to provide outpatient clinical support in the specialty of bariatric surgery. The RDN will perform nutrition assessments and develop nutrition care regimens for patients in the Adult Bariatric Surgery Program, including both the pre- and post-operative bariatric populations. The RDN will provide services at the main campus and offsite locations, such as the Chelsea Health Center and Domino's Farms.

  • Organize patient health and disease information in order to identify nutrition related problems

  • Perform nutrition diagnosis after identifying and determining the cause of the problem

  • Develop and implement an individualized plan to address patient specific needs

  • Assist patient in behavior-based goal setting

  • Measure effectiveness of nutrition interventions in reaching desired outcomes

  • Reassess the nutrition care process and implement changes as indicated

  • Base interventions on reviews of quality research and/or use of medical nutrition therapy evidenced-based practice

  • Chart nutritional diagnosis, individualized nutrition treatment plan, follow-up documentation of patient outcomes and revisions to plan in the medical record. This communication is performed in a timely manner. Abide by UMHS policy for the proper use of patients' protected health information.

  • Provide personal or phone contact and follow-up with patients as needed

  • Recognize the varied needs of age-specific populations as well as cultural, religious and ethnic concerns

  • Participate in multidisciplinary bariatric review committee meetings

  • Facilitate group programs including: support group meetings and nutrition classes on a scheduled or as needed basis

  • Incorporate evidence-based standards when interpreting patient-related data

  • Precept dietetic interns

  • Conduct in-services and educational presentations to hospital/departmental staff, dietetic interns and community groups

  • Participate in the registry of eligible patients for the Michigan Bariatric Surgery Collaborative

  • Participate in nutrition research studies and communicate findings through reports, abstracts, presentations, and publication

Required Qualifications*

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree granted by an accredited college or university or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

  • Completion of a didactic program in dietetics and supervised practice program approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association. Must be credentialed as RDN within 6 months of hire date.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

  • Able to work with a team to accomplish organizational goals

  • Communicate in a clear, concise and diplomatic manner both verbally and in writing

  • Familiar with ADA MNT protocols

  • Knowledge of human behavior and characteristic learning needs throughout the lifespan

  • Able to empower and motivate others

  • Implement critical thinking to solve problems

  • Use technology such as word processing, spreadsheet, email, and nutrient analysis software

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master's degree in Dietetics, Nutritional Science, Health Behavior/Health Education is preferred.

  • Experience with adult weight management and dietary management of bariatric surgical candidates in an outpatient setting.

  • Certificate of training in adult weight management by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.

  • Registration with the American Dietetic Association.
