Position Summary

Pierce County Superior Court is looking for highly qualified, professional, and committed team players for full-time Court Reporters. In this position you will attend and take the official record throughout Superior Court. You will work as a team with the judge and the judicial assistant as well as assist other judicial departments when coverage is needed.

The team consists of 23 elected Judges, 9 appointed Commissioners, 46 Judicial Department Staff Members, a Court Administrator, Deputy Court Administrator, and 34 administrative staff members. How to be Successful in the Role:

Your success will be found in providing court reporting services in court which require independent judgment within policy guidelines, and considerable knowledge of legal terminology, processes, and procedures.

You will report directly to a Superior Court Judge and will be responsible for creating the official record of all sessions of Superior Court as directed by the Judge, which includes, but is not limited to the following: Pretrial hearings, impaneling of the jury, opening statements, testimony, closing arguments, exceptions to jury instructions, jury instructions, post-trial hearings, and sentencing hearings.

You will also be responsible for providing Realtime (preferred, not required) to the Court, producing efficient and expeditious productions of transcripts and maintaining control and custody of stenographic notes. You will also prepare and maintain detailed chronological logs with applicable Superior Court rules and the timely securing and indexing of stenographic notes in accordance with the Superior Court Clerk's Office.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be a Certified Court Reporters as tested and qualified under WAC 308-14-085 and

  • Maintain certification on a yearly basis with the Department of Licensing.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Certified as a Registered Professional Reporter (RPR)

Compensation for this position is $53.44 per hour.

Judicial Leave

Superior Court and District Court Judges and Administrators, Superior Court Commissioners, Court Reporters and Judicial Assistants in regular full time positions are entitled to 30 days , non accruable judicial leave each calendar year. Judicial Leave is attached to the Judicial Department, not the employee. Judicial leave is not accruable, pro-ratable or transferable.

Military Leave

Pierce County has a proud history of supporting the armed forces and provides members of the armed forces with up to 21 days paid military leave per state fiscal year.

Holidays

Some full-time employees are entitled to ten paid holidays:

Personal Holidays

Regular full-time and regular part-time employees also receive two additional paid personal holidays. Each paid personal holiday accrues on January 1 of each year and must be taken during the calendar year in which it was accrued.

Sick Leave

Sick leave accrues on a bi-weekly basis, at the rate of one day per month.

Insurance Benefits

Employees are eligible to enroll each year in a flexible spending plan, which enables them to use tax-deferred dollars toward their health care and dependent care expenses. Retirement and Deferred Compensation

Pierce County employees are members of the State of Washington's Department of Retirement Systems (DRS) and depending on the position or previous DRS enrollment will be able to enroll in one of many programs DRS offers. Employees also have the ability to participate in the Nationwide Deferred Compensation Plan. This is a supplemental retirement savings program that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.

Social Security

All Pierce County employees are covered by the federal Social Security and Medicare systems. The county and the employee pay an equal amount into the system.
