At Sankofa, the special education paraprofessional i​​s a critical role aimed at providing dedicated support to students with disabilities, particularly students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. As a paraprofessional, you will work closely with school staff, your assigned lead teacher, and members of the special education department to implement academic, social/emotional, and behavioral support to your assigned students. This role offers a valuable opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the student's academic and social-emotional development within the Montessori environment. The position reports to the Director of Student Support and Services.

Role Overview 

The special education Behavior Technician will provide direct support to assigned students within their assigned classroom and across the school building, as needed. They will work collaboratively with school staff, including general education teachers, special education teachers, and paraprofessionals to implement individualized behavior intervention strategies designed to decrease the occurrences of target behaviors and promote social interactions and academic engagement. 

Key Responsibilities

  1. Provide academic and behavior support to assigned students utilizing evidence-based strategies to decrease occurrences of target behaviors and support their success in the classroom.
  2. Implement behavior intervention plans (BIPs) with fidelity, adhering to the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and school protocols.
  3. Collect and accurately record data on target behaviors and interventions implemented, ensuring data integrity and reliability.
  4. Collaborate with the student's educational team, including special education teachers, therapists, and administrators, to review progress, adjust strategies as needed, and ensure consistency across settings.
  5. Support students in transitioning between activities and environments, implementing visual supports and structured routines to promote predictability and reduce anxiety.
  6. Communicate effectively with school staff regarding student's progress, challenges, and strategies for support.
  7. Supervise students closely during breakfast and /or lunch and/or recess and/or specials
  8. Performs other duties as assigned by classroom teacher or appropriate administrator. 
  9. Participate in training and professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge in behavior management,  autism support, and the Montessori philosophy.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

For this position, we’re looking for candidates that possess a combination of the following skills:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred, but not required 
  • Must hold a valid certification as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT).
  • Experience working in a school setting as a RBT
  • Previous experience working with individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and implementing Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) techniques.
  • Knowledge of behavior intervention strategies and experience implementing behavior plans in educational or clinical settings.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and support positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to meet the changing needs of the student and school environment.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Warm and firm demeanor
  • Work collaboratively with a growth mindset. Give and receive feedback in a spirit of craftsmanship.
  • Strong learning orientation and desire to work in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment
  • Can complete physical demands of the role (including standing and walking for extended periods of time and lifting heavy objects up to 40 Ibs)

COMPENSATION

  • Sankofa Montessori’s compensation philosophy is to pay competitively for the PK-12 charter market to ensure equity across our institution.  Sankofa Montessori is committed to internal pay equity throughout our organization. Because of this, we do not negotiate salary offers outside our salary bands. The salary for this role is $33,304 for 201 working days, this breaks down to $23 per hour
  • Sankofa Montessori also offers competitively priced health benefits.
  • This role is also eligible for TRS benefits
