The complex care department includes programs that care for our most complex patients, working together to create an eco-system to differentially care for patients. Included departments are listed below:

  • Optum Acute Care at Home: home hospitalization program that provides hospital level care in the home. Director will work with our vendor partners and RN clinical leaders to ensure high quality, safe care and ramp to expected patient volumes

  • Call us first: 24/7 RN care manager line that provides triage and advice to patients as well as support for the other programs.

  • Personalized care team: Home based multi-disciplinary primary care team tasked with caring for our most complex patients

  • Senior Advantage Clinic: urgent care clinic for senior patients

with serious acute issues

  • Palliative care team

  • Skilled nursing facility team

  • Care management team

Under indirect supervision, in partnership with Medical Directors, the operations director for complex care is tasked with ensuring the smooth operational functioning of departments, optimizing efficiencies/economies of scale between the listed departments and ensuring coordination between departments. Given structural complexity involved, interested candidate must have solid skills in team-building, cross department collaboration and building consensus amongst disparate clinical and operational leaders.

The director has responsibility for the P & L of complex care, and for assuring consistent, high quality performance for all sites of service. Accountable for setting and executing annual budget, strategic business development, profitable growth and effective business operations for multiple sites/departments.

If you are located in within WA state only, you will have the flexibility to work remotely*, as well as work in the office as you take on some tough challenges. This position is required to be in office 50% of the time.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Consistent with core values and operating principles, and in collaboration with Medical Directors, sets expectations and holds accountability for overall site operations. Develop business plans for profitable growth, new service and enhanced profitability

  • Leads future growth and expansion projects

  • Ensures Practice Managers (PMs) pursue continuous improvement process efforts for operational areas

  • Researches, evaluates and recommends better practices (flow, clinical systems and staffing models) to facilitate transition to new and better ways of doing business

  • Oversees operations including oversight (up to 200 teammates and providers at up to 6 sites of service) planning, budgeting, execution, and engagement

  • Interacts with external business partners/joint venture partners to promote growth opportunities, problem solve issues or negotiate assistance

  • With Service Line Medical leadership, aligns goals with Regional and National operating reviews (QOR) including Quality, Service and Profitability goals and National initiatives

  • Ensures PMs are compliant with regulatory requirements through going to Gemba and participating in Audits

  • Represents Optum Washington in community activities

  • Oversees processes for resolution of patient complaints

  • Ensures confidentiality of patient information following HIPAA guidelines and TEC policies

  • Attends training to meet requirements of the job position and as needed or mandated by TEC policies, Div. of Occupational Safety & Health (DOSH), OSHA, L&I and other state/federal regulations

  • Has regular and predictable attendance

Required Qualifications:

  • WA State Driver's License

  • 3+ years of experience in a management role

  • Healthcare experience

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across the Clinic with various departments including but not limited to: business services, lab, imaging, primary care and external customers and business partners

  • Proven ability to navigate relationships with and influence physicians

  • Demonstrated effectiveness in business development and growth

  • Demonstrated business skills including business development, business planning, and operations

  • Proven solid communication skills with ability to work collaboratively with physicians and staff

  • Proven excellent negotiation skills

  • Willing or ability to work on site - 40-50% of time

Preferred Qualification:

  • 2+ years of clinical experience

Washington Residents Only: The salary range for this role is $104,700 to $190,400 annually. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
