Job Summary:

The Regional Medical Director for the South Region Provides expertise in caring for patients with life limiting, serious illness and their families. Responsible for assisting with the provision and maintenance of medical direction to hospice/palliative care teams which includes consultation, review of patient care, staff education, and liaison activities within the medical community. The regional medical director also collaborated with fellow OHI regional medical directors and OHI mission, operations and clinical councils to set quality standards and clinical objectives within Ohio's Hospice statewide. The overall goal is to improve quality of life for every patient and family we have the privilege of serving.

Qualifications:

  • MD or DO

  • Prior experience in working with terminally ill patients.

  • Board certification or eligibility in Hospice & Palliative Medicine preferred.

  • Active Unrestricted Ohio license to practice Osteopathic or Allopathic Medicine.

  • Unrestricted DEA license

  • CPR Certified.

  • Computer skills sufficient to properly document services and care.

  • Ability to drive during daytime, nighttime, or inclement weather.

  • Valid Driver's License with Safe Driving Record

  • State Minimum Automobile Insurance Coverage

Standards

  • Expected Hours of Work: This position operates in a healthcare environment, open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Scheduled shifts may include days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.

  • Confidentiality: "Confidential information" includes proprietary information that is not known generally to the public or the industry, or is known only through improper means, customer lists, customer files, personnel files, computer records, financial and marketing data, research plans, formulas, electronic codes, computer programs, and trade secrets. Staff must not use or disclose confidential information that they produce or obtain during or after employment, except to the extent such use or disclosure is required by their jobs. This obligation remains even after an individual's employment relationship ends. On termination of employment, whether voluntary or involuntary, all documents, computer records, and other tangible property in the staff member's possession or control must be returned to Ohio's Hospice.

Key Responsibilities:

  • The Regional Medical Director is the member of the Ohio's Hospice interdisciplinary team (IDT) who provides medical direction and support to the hospice staff to ensure continuity of care and meet compliance regulations.

  • Provides direct and indirect medical supervision to team physicians and APNs.

  • Serves as medical consultant to the Ohio's Hospice interdisciplinary teams. Provides expertise in case review, eligibility, & clinical management. Exercises their ability to review the drug formulary with the team along with the pharmacist to ensure patient safety, medication safety and regulatory compliance. Attends IDT meetings as assigned.

  • The Medical Director is available for timely consultation with staff in person or via telephone when the need arises. This ensures prompt attention to the patient's needs and resolution of any questions or concerns.

  • Assists in the documentation of patient eligibility/certification, General Inpatient (GIP) level of care, orders, and discharges. Documentation is performed the day services are rendered to a standard of 100%. Verbal orders and certification/re-certification forms will be signed in a timely manner.

  • Is available as a consultant to the hospice patient's primary (attending) physician, serve as a liaison between the attending physician and the hospice team, and communicate with the primary physician as appropriate to ensure continuity of care. Assumes co-responsibility for all Ohio's Hospice patient care needs and shares expertise in palliative care with the primary physicians. This will ensure access, quality palliative care, and consistent outcomes for all patients in the Ohio's Hospice program.

  • Participates in decisions related to admissions, initial certifications, re-certifications, discharges, level of care or diagnosis changes, and care planning for Ohio's Hospice patients to ensure compliance with requirements for hospice licensure and certification by CMS. Initial certification and re-certification narratives are completed within 72 hours of receipt of necessary information to a standard of no more than three late per every two weeks.

  • Assists with development, review and revision of patient-care policies and procedures. These documents are a team effort and must provide the input and approval by a MD to assure quality.

  • Participates in education programs concerning medical issues related to hospice care for hospice staff, professional students, medical staff, and community groups by request. Acts as a liaison to the medical community and the community at large regarding hospice and palliative care. Hospice and palliative care must be supported by continuous medical education programs to sustain our mission and give our care providers the tools to consistently meet the highest standard of care.

  • Assists in establishing and implementing medical quality assurance standards. Engages in activities to ensure that quality assurance reviews of hospice medical care are completed. These measures are required for licensed medical institutions and also assist in compliance for review organizations.

  • Identifies own educational needs to keep current and upgrade knowledge and skills via conferences, workshops, courses, seminars, self-study, etc. These are a necessity for providing excellent medical management as well as fulfilling State CME requirements.

  • Adheres to applicable Ohio's Hospice policies and personnel qualifications to meet compliance. Obtains prior permission from the Regional Executive Vice President or Ohio's Hospice CEO for any compensated medical related work done in any setting other than Ohio's Hospice.

  • Assist in other activities and departments when requested.

  • Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement activities to support the quality of Ohio's Hospice services.

Compliance:

  • Participates in quality assurance process, which will include periodic chart review at a minimum of annually, subsequent face to face conference with collaborating or supervising physician, review of patient's evaluation of care, and a periodic review, at least semi-annually, of prescriptions written and prescribing patterns as required by Ohio Revised Code.

  • Adheres to standard precautions and transmission-based infection control procedures, utilizing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment.

  • Complies with HIPAA requirements.

  • Participates and complies with all deadlines as required for Annual Education.

  • Participates and complies as required for Employee Health Screenings.

  • Participates and complies with Meeting Attendance as required.

  • Follows all regulatory guidelines including state and federal.

  • Accepts other duties as assigned.
