Manages and coordinates administrative functions of the Baltimore Regional Anatomic Pathology/ Histology and Cytology Laboratory, and provides technical guidance to primary caregivers with respect to technical aspects of Anatomic Pathology/ Histology and Cytology. If not a qualified cytology supervisor, cytology will technically report to the Medical Director.
Bachelor of Science degree or appropriate clinical discipline.
3 years supervisory experience in an Anatomic Pathology/ Histology and/or Cytology Laboratory.
Appropriate laboratory certification preferred, HT or Cytotechnology, or both.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong computer skills.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Assists in development of department goals, objectives, policies, and procedures. Ensures compliance with departmental policies and procedures and governmental and accreditation regulations.
Assists in development of department operating budget and ensures that department operates within budget.
Collaborates with laboratory medical directors at testing sites to assure compliance with quality, accreditation and licensure requirements.
Communicates with physicians and hospital laboratory staff regarding Anatomic Pathology/ Histology and Cytology issues. Facilitates coordination between Anatomic Pathology/ Histology and Cytology department staff and hospital-based staff members involved in Anatomic Pathology/ Histology and Cytology testing.
Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Ensures compliance with hospital/facility policies and procedures and governmental/accreditation regulations.
Develops, maintains, and monitors comprehensive and effective operational manuals, records, and reports.
Ensures provision of system-wide continuing education in Anatomic Pathology/ Histology and Cytology.
Oversees, facilitates and coordinates training of Anatomic Pathology/ Histology and Cytology staff, technical and clerical staff.
Guides training opportunities for Anatomic Pathology, Histology and Cytology professionals as requested.
Provides technical guidance to physicians including surgeons, pathologists, and others regarding Anatomic Pathology/ Histology and Cytology department issues and specimen requirements. Provides literature and other technical resources as needed.
Keeps abreast of advances in Microbiology testing and hospital testing needs to evaluate, recommend and implement new technologies, as appropriate.
Manages procurement activities including purchasing, receiving, storage, and utilization of equipment, materials, and supplies. Maintains and establishes contractual services. Ensures proper procurement processes per MedStar standards are followed.
Oversees the selection, training, orientation, and assignment of department staff. Assists in development of standards of performance, evaluates performance, and conducts performance management planning. Initiates or makes recommendations for personnel actions. Maintains ongoing communication with subordinates to review programs, provide feedback, discuss new developments, and exchange information.
Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams as appropriate. Participates in meetings, serves on committees and represents the department and hospital/facility in community outreach efforts as appropriate.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Proposes capital equipment expenditures, payment to reference laboratories, and other expenses and submits to Laboratory Administrative Director for approval.
