Regional HR Manager - Restaurant

Company Profile: Las Trojas Cantina Mexican Restaurant, Inc. (the Corporation) is comprised of authentic Mexican restaurants in Athens, Birmingham, Florence, Hazel Green, Huntsville, and Madison, Alabama, as well as Fayetteville, Tennessee, and Morrow, Georgia (SE of Atlanta).

Position Overview:
The Human Resources (HR) Manager is responsible for developing and executing HR strategy in support of the Corporation. He/she establishes policies and procedures in the following areas: staffing, compensation and benefits, training, performance management, employee relations, safety, and records management. The HR Manager ensures corporation-wide compliance with employment regulations in multiple states. He/she works with Restaurant Managers in recruiting, training, and retention of employees. The HR Manager ensures best practices in all HR functional areas to support general restaurant operations. He/she builds and maintains a winning team of managers and associates who provide excellent hospitality services to our patrons.



  • Maintains Corporate compliance with state and federal employment laws including, but not limited to: ADA, ADEA, COBRA, EPA (Equal Pay Act), FLSA, FMLA, GINA, HIPAA, IRCA, NLRA, OSHA, PPACA, Title 7 of the Civil Rights Act, USERRA, and others

  • Ensures Wage and Hour compliance by conducting periodic wage and hour reviews

  • Performs EEO investigations, as required, and coordinates with response to EEO/Title IV complaints

  • Partners with managers and supervisors regarding leave of absence and disability accommodation inquiries to ensure compliance with federal and state leave of absence and disability laws and policies

  • Ensures proper display of all legally required posters

  • Conducts State New Hire reporting on employees

  • Responds to Unemployment Claims in a timely manner


  • Develops comprehensive strategic recruiting and retention plans to meet staffing needs

  • Prepares and regularly reviews job descriptions to accurately reflect job duties and requirements

  • Announces job vacancies to both internal and external candidates; sources for qualified candidates

  • Establishes and maintains relationships with staffing agencies, education institutions/training programs, and other recruiters

  • Screens applications and resumes; evaluates candidates and makes recommendations on selection

  • Prepares interview questions and trains managers on effective interviewing techniques

  • Conducts and/or coordinates reference checks, background checks, and drug screening, as required

  • Promotes the organization at recruiting events and on social media to assist with recruiting efforts

  • Prepares offer letters and coordinates employee on-boarding activities

  • Periodically assesses the effectiveness of recruiting efforts


  • Develops a succession plan that corresponds to the company's strategy and objectives

  • Provides orientation for all new employees

  • Coordinates with managers to prepare and implement individual training plans to develop hourly and salaried associates

  • Collaborates with Owners and Managers to facilitate manager development opportunities and training in the areas of performance management, conflict resolution, team member engagement, relevant employment laws, and respectful workplace environment

  • Conducts in-field training meetings and round tables to advance manager knowledge and skill in effectively managing staff and personnel issues

Employee Relations

  • Ensures compliance with Corporate policies, practices and procedures including the Employee Handbook and Corporate Code of Integrity, Ethics, and Conduct and applicable federal and state laws

  • Provides consultation, guidance, and coaching to ensure the consistent interpretation, application and resolution of employment issues in the areas of performance management, misconduct, discipline, drug testing, demotions/promotions, conflict resolution, termination procedures, discrimination, harassment, retaliation, and state/federal employment law

  • Researches and provides recommended solutions to managers when employee performance or behavior needs correction

  • Manages the disciplinary process, including termination of employment

  • Administers Internal Complaint Process response and resolution

  • Ensures a positive employee relations environment through strong relationships at all levels of the business

  • Tracks and analyzes team member relations issue trends, diagnoses root causes, and develops recommendations for corrective strategies

  • Assists with Reduction in Force planning and execution, when needed; reviews losses for disparate impact


  • Develops and implements competitive and cost-effective compensation and benefit plans

  • Cultivates and maintains a positive employee culture

  • Oversees employee Performance Appraisals to ensure employees receive meaningful, timely performance feedback and recognition

  • Oversees Corporate Recognition Programs and retention initiatives

  • Proactively develops supervisory and management level talent within the organization to minimize turnover and increase retention

  • Oversees and/or coordinates Corporate events and community outreach (volunteer initiatives)

  • Conducts exit interviews with staff; analyzes data and makes recommendations to the management team

General HR Management

  • Develops and administers the Human Resources Budget

  • Uses problem-solving skills to deal with issues as they arise; analyzes information and recommends solutions

  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshop, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies

  • Selects and/or manages Human Resource Information System (HRIS) and Payroll systems

  • Processes personnel action forms in timely manner to assure employee records are kept up-to-date

  • Creates and updates forms and checklists to process personnel transactions

  • Maintains company personnel files, databases, spreadsheets, and lists with employment information

  • Oversees the scheduling and time sheet submission process

  • Conducts verification of employment

Policies & Procedures

  • Develops and implements HR plans, policies, and procedures to support business objectives

  • Publishes and maintains Corporate Employee Handbook(s)

  • Responds to requests for information and policy interpretation


  • Communicates with managers, employees, customers, and others in a courteous and professional manner

  • Relays pertinent information to employees throughout the organization; provides status updates

  • Employs mechanisms to foster employee communication


Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resource Management, business administration, or similar related field preferred

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in Human Resources at the Generalist or Manager Level

  • National HR Certification (PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, or SHRM-SCP) preferred

  • Experience with multi-unit, multi-state organizations

  • High level of proficiency in MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel

  • Prior HR or Management experience in multi-unit restaurant business preferred

  • Bilingual in English/Spanish a plus

  • Must be able to work long hours, scheduled or unscheduled, which will include nights, weekends, and as emergencies arise

  • Must be available to travel regularly to restaurants in Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia


  • Understands principles, practices, and procedures of: Human Resources Management, Employee Relations, Job Analysis, Staffing and Recruiting, Compensation and Benefits, Performance Evaluations, Training, Safety and Worker's Compensation, Personnel Records Retention, Budget Management, Supervision, Communication, and Customer Service

  • Familiarity with ADA, ADEA, COBRA, EPA (Equal Pay Act), FLSA, FMLA, GINA, HIPAA, IRCA, NLRA, OSHA, PPACA, Title 7 of the Civil Rights Act, USERRA, and FLSA, EEOC, ADA, OSHA, and related state and federal regulations/agencies required

  • Thorough working knowledge of human resource-related laws and regulations and their application to daily business practices

  • Understands confidentiality/privacy requirements

  • Works well both independently and in a team environment

  • Has exceptional attention to detail
