Purpose

The City of Savannah is seekingan energetic and detail-orientedindividualto join our Recreation & Leisure Services team as the Regional Centers Supervisor. Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director of Programming, this position must have a passion and vision for recreation programming, exceptional customer service, and a commitment to leadership while serving the community. Through subordinate center supervisors, performs responsible supervisory and participatory work directing recreation activities at multiple Community Centers in one of three geographic regions of the City of Savannah.

Essential Job Functions

  • Plans, schedules, promotes, and administers a comprehensive recreation program; develops and coordinates general recreation programs, athletics, camps, and special events using public recreation facilities operated by the City.

  • Monitors registration of all recreation activities provided by the department; periodically communicates registration status to instructors; recommends program extensions, expansions, changes, and cancellation to Assistant Director before implementation.

  • Evaluates community needs and interests; prepares community surveys; meets with individuals, community groups, and school officials to assure that facilities, programs, and activities are meeting changing needs of the community.

  • Manages, supervises, and monitors program implementation, facilitation, registration, permitting, rentals, and maintenance; provides expertise, direction, and management for staff, operations, customer service, and general program development, planning, and promoting.

  • Hires, trains, schedules, and supervises full-time, part-time, variable employees, and volunteers; assigns daily tasks, evaluates performance, provides feedback and guidance, recommends disciplinary actions, and facilitates teamwork and personal growth.

  • Communicates and enforces rules and regulations; ensures consistent and professional customer service for the patrons and community; facilitates staff and program success by providing training, establishing standards of service, and supervising service delivery.

  • Handles cash and monies from registrations, permitting, and general admissions; selects and monitors instructors, service providers, vendors, and other contracts/agreements; oversees inventory, inspections of equipment, and ordering supplies.

  • Solicits community support and sponsorships; oversees and supports the development of the program calendar; promotes and markets to the community, media, and sponsors; prepares and distributes media information, publications and literature; updates information on social media and websites.

  • Responsible for assessing, determining, recommending, and managing of building maintenance activities including the maintenance, repair, construction and operation city recreational facilities.

  • Performs a wide range of administrative duties in the daily, weekly, and monthly operations; monitors and maintains budgets and in-kind services; submits budget reports and makes recommendations on budgetary spending; creates invoices for rentals, equipment, and staff time; prepares and coordinates quotes for requisitions and bid information for request for proposals (RFP); ensures vendors have up-to-date certificates/licenses; creates and reviews various documents and reports.

  • Creates and/or collaborates with city employees/departments, citizens, and community groups on a variety of programs and events.

  • Serves as a city representative at neighborhood meetings.

  • Requires considerable public contact work. May be required to work flexible schedules

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Recreation, Leisure, or a related field PLUS two (2) years supervisory and customer service experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.

Additional Requirements

Background investigation, including supervised drug screen, post offer/pre-employment medical screen; and verification of education, certifications, and licenses required prior to employment.

  • Knowledge of customer service and public engagement.

  • Knowledge of program and planning for municipal recreation centers.

  • Knowledge of supervisory and management principles. Coordinating, organizing, and directing programs, special events, and camps with staff involvement.

  • Knowledge of general office policies and procedures, computers, and general office equipment.

  • Skill in organizing and assigning work while setting priorities to meet deadlines.

  • Skills in data collection, record keeping and report preparation.

  • Skill in interpersonal relations engaging with staff to provide performance feedback and general management.

  • Skills in researching, compiling and summarizing information in oral and written communication.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain first aid and CPR credentials.

Minimum Standards

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Recreation and Leisure Services Director assigns work in terms of department goals and objectives. The recreation superintendent reviews work through conferences, reports, and observation of department activities.

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include Recreation and Leisure Services policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY: The work consists of varied duties related to planning, directing, and managing multiple community centers in one of three geographic regions of the City of Savannah.

SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to plan, direct, and manage the recreation program activities for several community center locations within the Recreation Division of the Recreation and Leisure Services department. Successful performance helps ensure the provision of athletic and aquatic programs designed to meet community needs.

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, representatives of other recreational and athletic organizations, motel and restaurant personnel, and members of the community.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light objects and occasionally lifts heavy objects.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in an office or outdoors. May work a varied schedule which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: This position has direct supervision over multiple Community Center Supervisors and Program coordinators.
