Job Title: Regulated Medical Waste / Hipaa Technician
Department: Facility Maintenance & Operations
Job Summary:
As an RMW /HIPAA technician's primary responsibilities include sorting and properly disposing of materials. You collect and organize a variety of materials into their appropriate containers. They will coordinate the collection, sorting, disposing, and transporting of Regulated Medical Waste, Solid Waste, and Recyclable materials from main buildings and outlaying buildings by following Federal, State, and local laws. As well as disposing of confidential information in regulation of HIPAA law. This position will unload and load recyclables on trucks and may clean materials as needed for recycling requirements. Technicians will also be recording the production data and must comply with laws regarding chemical waste.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Duties/Responsibilities:
Keep trash carts clean and sanitized after each shift
Disposes of waste materials/recyclable items according to set policies and procedures
Monitor equipment operation and report malfunctions, maintenance or any type of repairs needed to supervisor
Keeps trash room/chute and ground area clean
Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling hazardous waste
Ensure that hazardous waste containers are removed by vendor once they are full
Operates recycling processing equipment including but not limited to bailers and crushers, and compactor
Removes and breaks all empty boxes from floors and transports to recycling bale
Maintains recycling area in a clean, well-organized manner avoiding clutter and potential fire hazard
Operates a variety of recycling equipment and vehicles such as baling machines, forklifts, and trucks
Ensures confidentiality of recycled materials from pick-up point through the end of recycling process
Answers questions and promotes the recycling program to employees; instructs employees on appropriate materials to place in containers
Watches flow of recycled materials and makes recommendations to the number of bins provided, and frequency of pickups
Ensures care in the disposal of chemicals and/or medical materials that are improperly placed in recycling bins
Required Skills/Abilities:
Proficient written and oral communication skills according to skill requirements
Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment
Ability to understand and follow safety procedures
Ability to maintain the confidentiality of records and information
Ability to lift and manipulate heavy objects
Knowledge of disposal of hazardous materials
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent
At least two years of related experience required
Physical Requirements:
Prolonged period of standing, bending, reaching, and working with hands
Occasional periods of prolonged exposure to load noises
Ability to lift up to 75 pounds at times
Ability to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands as necessary
Ability to hear and see to position and safety requirement levels
Occasional exposure to elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, and chemicals
Special Qualifications/Requirements:
Must be able to successfully pass as required a federal, state, or local government's background investigation
Possession of Valid Drivers License
