We are currently recruiting for a Recreational Therapist.  This position is assigned a caseload within the Recreational Therapy (RT) Services Mobility Skills program or Social Skills program by the RT Director.  Job responsibilities include the following and any other duties assigned:

  • As a member of the treatment team, this position is responsible for assessing an individual's needs through a variety of RT assessment tools, writing goals and objectives, implementing RT interventions to address active treatment with mobility or social needs of the individual, and completing accurate and timely documentation for these interventions.

  • May assist with the Clinical Internship Program as assigned and assists the RT Director in various administrative duties.

  •  Participates and assists in campus-wide special activities as assigned by the RT Director.

This is a full-time position and eligible for the full State benefits package including health insurance, paid sick/vacation/holidays, retirement, etc.

The normal working hours are Monday

  • Friday, 8:00 a.m.

  • 5:00 p.m. with some variations as required.

ALL employees of Murdoch Center are designated as ESSENTIAL for adverse weather and emergency events.

Murdoch Developmental Center is a 24/7 state residential facility located in Butner, NC, near the Research Triangle area.Murdoch serves individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD). Murdoch is a caring community where professionals work with people of various ages, cognitive and functional abilities.

Qualified applicants must document on the application that they possess all of the following:

  • Knowledge of human structures, physiology of human structures, mechanics of movement, life cycle growth  and development, psychological functioning, pathology in psychological functioning, cognitive learning and motor learning that contribute to health and human functioning.

  • Knowledge of recreational therapy theory, principles, techniques, and methods as well as their specific implications and applications to individuals with developmental disabilities and mental illness with an emphasis on restoring, remediating, or rehabilitating physical and/or mental functioning and independence.

  • Knowledge of co-occurring disorders and their implications for recreational therapy services are necessary.

  • Experience with basic principles of group facilitation techniques, debriefing and behavior management skills is necessary.

  • Experience in accurately administering assessment tools, developing treatment plans, and evaluating progress according to the professional standards of recreational therapy.

  • Experience in writing functional outcome goals based on interpretation of assessment results.

  • Experience with assistive devices, technology and selecting activity modifications is necessary.

  • Ability to maintain accurate and thorough documentation is required.

  • Ability to present evaluative reports to interdisciplinary team and family members.

  • Experience building and maintaining effective working relationships with clients, families, and a variety of professional disciplines.

Management Preferences:

Experience in working with individuals of all ages with intellectual disabilities/developmental disabilities in a clinical setting.
