The incumbent is responsible for developing, planning, implementing and evaluating a diversified and comprehensive recreation therapy program to meet the needs and capabilities of patients in various areas of the South Texas Veterans Health Care System, Audie Campus and Kerrville Campus.

Responsibilities

The principal duties include assessing the patient's physical, cognitive, emotional, social, strengths and limitations as they pertain to leisure function. Developing an individualized, comprehensive treatment plan with goals based on the findings of the assessment.

Interventions which may include individual group programs, are planned to meet the goals. The therapist plans and implements a variety of programs to meet the needs of the patient and assist the patient to achieve his/her goals. Plans various programs directed towards achieving such therapeutic objectives as diminishing emotional stress, providing a sense of achievement, channeling energies and interests, aiding physical and mental rehabilitation and promoting successful community re-entry.

Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 8:00 - 4:30 pm. Some evenings, weekends and holidays for special events.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/11/2018.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

For a GS-07 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials.

For a GS-09 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-07. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials.

Basic Requirements

Applicants must meet one of the following educational requirements:

Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in therapeutic recreation, art therapy, drama therapy, dance therapy, or music therapy;

OR

Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in a related field involving therapeutic emphasis or concentration that included at least 36 semester hours in therapeutic courses as described below:
18 semester hours of therapeutic recreation courses; and
18 semester hours that include a combination of abnormal psychology, physiology, human anatomy and development, disabilities and general recreation.

GS-07

Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.

Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: professional knowledge of the concepts, principles, and practice of the specialized field of recreation therapy and the fundamental sciences of physiology, anatomy and pathology; knowledge of a body extensive standardized and non-standardized rules, procedures or operations requiring considerable training experience in therapy, therapeutic activities and techniques, basic communication, interpersonal skills, physical disabilities, psychosocial problems, developmental changes and geriatric behavior and physiology; ability to perform basic computer skills for data entry and basic word processing and Microsoft Outlook; knowledge of computerized patient records system (CPRS) to input assessment and progress notes and VISTA. OR,

Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience.

To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have 1 year of graduate-level education or superior academic achievement (directly related to the occupation). OR,

Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level.

You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond 1 year graduate level of education.To calculate the combination of education and , determine the amount of experience you have as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level. Then determine the amount of education you have as a percentage of the education required for the grade level. Add the two percentages; the total percentage must equal at least 100% to qualify for the grade level.

Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.

Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: knowledge of extensive body of standardized and non-standardized rules, procedures, operations, theories, methods and techniques of recreation therapy requiring extended education, training and experience of a professional; applies new scientific/technological procedures in the treatment of difficult or complex problems; advanced knowledge of all aspects of ambulation training and the application of techniques for patient treatment; advanced knowledge of therapy modality treatment advanced knowledge of the concepts, principles, and practices of the specialized field of therapy and the concepts, principles, and practices of the specialized field of therapy and the fundamental sciences such as physiology, anatomy, psychology and life span developmental processes; ability to perform basic computer skills for data entry and basic word processing and Microsoft Outlook; knowledge of computerized patient records system (CPRS) to input assessment and progress notes and VISTA. OR,

Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience.

To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree. OR,

Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week.

Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Essential Job Functions * Confers with staff, parents, and advisory councils on new activities which will motivate interest and participation. * Conducts classes in various skills/areas and to various age levels, including pre-schoolers. * Implements one or more recreational programs. * Plans activities, presentations, and special events. * Issues and receives any apparatus and equipment used by participants. * Assists in maintaining attendance reports and other necessary records. * Maintains equipment and facilities. * Recruits, trains, and oversees volunteer workers and tournament participants including giving tours and information to potential participants. * Assists in planning, promoting, conducting, and overseeing recreational activities and special events for all groups of ages. * Assists with regular inventories and ensuring the adequate levels of supplies. * Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required. Job Requirements * High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency). * One (1) year of work experience in recreational activities. * This position requires a valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License.
