Duties Summary

Manages a recreational center or facility and, in addition, plans and conducts a variety of recreational activities in support of a planned recreation program.

There is one (1) permanent full-time vacancy with the Department of Parks and Recreation - Recreation Division in Kailua-Kona.

The eligible list may be used for other permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment.

Examples of Duties

  • Manages and supervises a center or facility and plans and conducts a variety of recreational activities in support of a planned recreation program.

  • Develops recreational plans for a community in consultation with supervisors.

  • Promotes and stimulates community interest in recreational activities and programs.

  • Recruits and trains coaches and officials.

  • Recruits participants and volunteers.

  • Conducts, teaches, and instructs a variety of recreational activities or specialties.

  • Prepares fields and facilities for recreational activities.

  • May manage leagues.

  • Plans and organizes community activities such as parades, festivals, or holiday programs.

  • Officiates at organized sports activities.

  • Meets with and reviews requests and suggestions made by community groups regarding recreational needs.

  • Publicizes recreational activity.

  • Manages the facility by promoting safe practices, and preventing vandalism and abuse.

  • Prepares work orders.

  • Prepares reports of activities.

  • Assists with county-wide activities as assigned.

  • May supervise lower level personnel.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Training and Experience:

A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to:

  • graduation form high school, and
  • three (3) years of experience in organizing, conducting, or instructing recreational or group activities, and
  • possession of a valid State of Hawai`i driver's license (Class 3), or any other valid comparable driver's license at the time of filing. You will be required to submit your valid driver's license at time of hire.

Substitution of education for required experience: an AS degree or higher from an accredited college or university in Education, Health, Kinesiology, Physical Education, Recreation, Sports Exercise, or a related field, may be substituted for lack of the required experience on a year for year basis (examples: 30 college credits equals one (1) year of experience, an AS degree in the above disciplines can be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience, and a baccalaureate degree in the above disciplines can be substituted for all three (3) years of the required experience). Scan and attach official college transcript to your application to be credited for substitution.

Volunteer experience: Volunteer experience will be considered provided that it includes organizing, conducting, or instructing recreational or group activities. Provide detailed information in Supplemental Question #7 including your total number of volunteer hours.

Note: A current American Red Cross Standard First Aid Certificate is required prior to the completion of probation.

Examination: All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant's training, education and experience as presented in the application.

Note: In-person interviews and/or further testing in Hawai'i County may be required at the discretion of the hiring department/agency. Knowledge of: principles and practices of group leadership; practical application of the principles, practices, and techniques of recreational activities; the proper care and maintenance of equipment and facilities; principles and practices of instruction; group behavior; public relations; community organizations.

Ability to: supervise and train employees; plan, coordinate, and conduct recreational activities; stimulate participant interest, enthusiasm, and confidence in recreational pursuits; instruct and demonstrate recreational activities; understand and follow oral and written instructions; maintain good working relationships with the staff and the public; keep records and prepare reports.

Physical Requirements: Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
