 The Sports/Athletics Supervisor will oversee the City's Sports programs and facilities for the Parks & Recreation Department. You will be a key voice to engage the San Marcos community to promote the events, programs and offerings of the Parks & Recreation department.  And because you'll be serving a city that values community and vision - you'll be expected to stay on top of the industry's innovations and implementations.

The Recreation Supervisor II - Sports/Athletics Position:

With over 290 acres of park land for you to recreate in, San Marcos really lives up to its nickname "San Parkos". With our 42 parks, 2 aquatic facilities and 3 recreation centers, San Marcos is the perfect destination/location for community gatherings, outdoor sports, or a family picnic.  The City's extensive and growing 73-mile trail network is great for hiking, biking, running and equestrian use.

 The Parks & Recreation Department strives to provide the best recreation, programs and events in all of North County. The Recreation Supervisor II Sports/Athletics is a valuable resource in the organization that provides robust programming in addition to providing guidance to commission and boards as well as facilitating special events.

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in recreation administration, physical education, or a closely related field coupled with three years of responsible experience in recreation-related programs, preferably full-time in a municipal setting.  Additionally, this candidate will need to have strong internal and external customer service skills while interacting with colleagues throughout the City and in all interactions with members of the community.

The Recreation Supervisor II- Sports/Athletics should have a strong working knowledge of facilitating sports and athletic programs, including all elements of field allocation, league operations, facility upkeep, joint-use operations and community wide special events. Our ideal candidate likes to mentor and grow part time staff, pays attention to the details, is a creative problem solver and is a team player who is motivated, adaptable and able to work independently.

 This position is built for someone with adept political acumen that can build consensus with the Youth Sports Council and other stakeholder groups in the community. Successful candidates will possess an ability to work effectively in a busy environment within the "fun" department while maintaining a positive professional attitude.

While no two days are the same and there is not a typical day in the role of the Recreation Supervisor, the position could likely be called on for the following areas of responsibility at a moment's notice:

  • Role model for part-time staff.

  • Lead oversight of the gymnasium and maintain high quality customer service as the gym is the "sports hub" of all sports San Marcos.

  • Monitor and update sports lighting schedules through Musco Administration.

  • Serve as the facilitator for sports fields and gymnasium rental agreements with the public and Youth Sports Council organizations.

  • Input classes into Active.net and schedule staff in When To Work software.

  • Conduct analysis and research to evaluate programs, events and field usage to prepare recommendations to the Parks & Recreation Director.

  • Prepare agenda's and serve as the staff liaison for the Youth Sports Council.

  • Dive into new projects involving Park Ranger/Outdoor Program, City special events and department wide team trainings... the possibilities are endless!

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A Bachelor's degree is desirable, but it's not required if candidate possess work experience that demonstrate ability to successfully perform the job. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:  

Education/Training

A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in recreation administration, physical education, or a closely related field.

Experience

Three years of responsible experience in recreation-related programs, preferably full-time in a municipal setting.
