If you are selected for an interview, you will be contacted directly by the Department.  Positions include day, evening, holiday and weekend shift work and require work in the sunlight and the elements.

Minimum age for Lifeguard is 15, all other positions require minimum age of 16.  All new employees will be subject to drug/alcohol screening, and will be fingerprinted prior to beginning work.  Required certifications must be submitted prior to employment.

 The following positions will be filled from this job posting:

 Recreation Specialist: $17.33 - $20.06/hour

  • Lifeguard

Recreation Instructor I: $17.92 - $25.23

  • Swim Lesson Instructor
  • Water Sports and Fitness Instructor

Recreation Crew Supervisor: $18.83 - $26.49

  • Swim Deck Lead

Recreation Specialist must be able to work with limited supervision and may also be responsible for giving direction to Recreation Leaders and/or volunteers directly involved in their programs.

Recreation Instructor I is required to provide quality instruction to youth and/or adults in various leisure time activities, is generally free to develop lesson plans for designated classes within the guidelines of departmental policies and/or certifying agency regulations, and is responsible for necessary training of staff and volunteers and program evaluations upon completion of a program or class.

Recreation Crew Supervisor is required to be involved in program development, communicate policies and procedures to staff, and work effectively with staff, volunteers, and the general public, ensuring friendly, efficient, and professional customer service at all times. The supervisor also assumes the Recreation Coordinator's duties in the Coordinator's absence

Recreation Specialist

  • Facilitate or supervise the daily activities of a recreation program or activity.
  • Respond to questions from program participants and other members of the public concerning programs.
  • Check facilities for possible safety hazards; secure facilities following completion of the activities.
  • Perform lifeguard duties during hours of facility operation.
  • Complete reports when required.
  • May be required to perform CPR and First Aid as necessary.
  • Provide information pertaining to City sponsored recreational events and activities to the public.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Recreation Instructor I

  • Plan, teach, and evaluate assigned recreation programs.
  • Develop and implement a curriculum in an interesting, well-rounded, and motivating manner.
  • Arrange for supplies, equipment and proper facilities in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrate safe and correct techniques with proper equipment in an appropriate environment.
  • Demonstrate good motivational skills and a courteous cooperative working relationship with students and the general public.
  • Supervise and assign job duties to assistants and/or volunteers.

  • Supervise multiple program sites and/or work shifts within a specific recreation program area.  
  • Develop, supervise, promote and evaluate quality facility programs and services.
  • Develop and implement creative, interesting, well-rounded, and motivating staff in-service training.

  • Demonstrate safe and proper handling of equipment in appropriate environment.

  • Knowledge of reporting procedures.

  • Typical education would include a high school diploma or equivalent, or current enrollment as a student.
  • Typical experience would include specialized recreation program experience or program specific knowledge.
  • Lifeguards:   Possession of the appropriate California driver's license is desirable, but not required, a valid Standard First Aid, Lifeguard Training, CPR for the Professional Rescuer. Must be a proficient swimmer.

  • Possession of the appropriate California driver's license is highly desirable, but not required. When assigned as a Camp Counselor, you must obtain Basic First Aid certification and CPR (adult, child and infant) and Basic Water Rescue certification within 60 days of hiring. When assigned to the Aquatic Center, must possess valid CPR and First Aid, as well as same certificates required of employees supervised.  Instructor certifications highly desirable.

Selection Process: Final appointment is contingent upon:

  • Positive past employment references (if applicable)
  • Passing a city paid fingerprinting criminal conviction check (applicants 18 years and older)
  • Passing a TB test and drug and alcohol screening test

Veteran's Credit: Applicants who attach a copy of the DD-214 to their application indicating "Honorable Discharge" from military service and receive a passing score on the examination process will have two (2) additional points added to their final examination score.
