Job Summary

Under general direction, is responsible for performing recreational work, organizing, and leading participants engaged in fitness and recreational activities sponsored by the City. May exercise functional supervision over assigned staff.

This position is an "unclassified" position and has no disciplinary appeal rights to the Municipal Civil Service Commission. This position is likewise subject at-will employment status and can be terminated at any time for any reason.

Work Location

Locations will vary based on events, classes, and other department needs.

Work Hours

Work schedule will primarily be based on Fitness in the Park classes in addition to other events, classes, and other department needs.

  • Monday

  • Thursday; 6:00 a.m.

  • 10:00 a.m.

  • Mobile Fit Events - various hours as assigned

Essential Job Functions

  • Confers with staff, parents, and advisory councils on new activities which will motivate interest and participation. To include, providing exceptional customer service.

  • Conducts classes in various skills/areas and to various age levels, including pre schoolers.

  • Designs and implements dynamic workouts in various skills/areas and to various age levels, including preschoolers.

  • Implements one or more recreational programs.

  • Plans activities, presentations, and special events.

  • Issues and receives any apparatus and equipment used by participants, which occasionally requires lifting and carrying equipment weighing up to 15 pounds.

  • Assists in maintaining attendance reports and other necessary records.

  • Maintains equipment and facilities.

  • Accompanies participants to tournaments and contest and occasionally officiates games.

  • Recruits, trains, and oversees volunteer workers and tournament participants including conducting walking tours of facilities and providing information.

  • Assists in planning, promoting, conducting, and overseeing recreational activities and special events for all groups of ages. To include, providing fitness motivation, engagement, and education to all participants.

  • Assists with regular inventories and ensuring the adequate levels of supplies.

  • Performs individual fitness assessments for participants.

  • Assists in developing group exercise plans for fitness program participants.

  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).

  • One (1) year of work experience in recreational activities.

  • Valid Class "C" Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in developing and implementing groupexerciseand programs.

  • Knowledge of current trends in the fitness field.

  • Fitness certifications.

  • Certified as a Zumba instructor, Yoga instructor, Group Fitness/Personal Trainer, or other related certifications.

  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

  • Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.

  • Knowledge of the specialty field for which hired.

  • Knowledge of techniques used in organized recreation and social activities for all age groups.

  • Knowledge of teaching techniques, procedures, and methods.

  • Knowledge of group activity procedures methods, and techniques.

  • Ability to develop, organize, and direct the teaching program of specialization.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and the general public.

  • Ability to provide direction to large groups of people during activities.

  • Ability to organize shows and special events.

  • Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.

  • Working conditions are in both indoor and outdoor recreation facilities.
