The City of Norfolk's Department of Parks & Recreation is seeking an experienced Recreation Specialist.  Work involves assisting with the planning, implementation and evaluation of athletic programs and leagues of the center and interacts with coaches, athletic associations, volunteers, officials, and part time staff.

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Coordinates, plans, schedules different Athletic leagues for both youth and adults

  • Works directly with coaches, athletic associations, volunteers, officials, and part time staff Demonstrates ability to multi-task and work in a team environment.

  • Assists with other office duties in Athletics including answering phones, customer service and renting fields, open space and shelters

  • Handles transactions for league fees, team fees and rentals.

  • Supervises and ensures quality of leagues/tournaments, etc.

  • Schedules games and practices and maintains organized calendar of such

  • Preps fields as needed.

  • Responsible for rec aides assigned to work specific leagues - training, scheduling, evaluating. Promotes and publicizes citywide events and leagues to increase registration and participation. Orders supplies as needed and ensures safety of all individuals that participate in leagues. Reports any and all safety issues to the Supervisor immediately.

Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Junior college, vocational, business, technical or correspondence schools are likely sources. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.

The preferred candidate will possess a minimum of two years of experience in athletic programming and scheduling.

Must be proficient with computers and able to handle coaches/ volunteers and officials in a professional manner at all times.

Preferred License(s) and/or Certification(s): Drivers License, CPR / First Aid / AED or obtain within 6mos of employment

Work Location: Lakewood Athletic Office, 1612 Willow Wood Drive, Norfolk, VA 23509

Work Hours: 40 hours/week M-F, 9am-5pm Evenings and Weekends required

Signing Bonus: This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus for applications received on or after February 22, 2022. The signing bonus will be paid in two (2) increments: $2,500 upon completion of 60 days of employment, and $2,500 upon completion of your probationary period. To receive the signing bonus, you must be an active employee in good standing.
