The Recreation Specialist directs trainees in leisure-time recreation/non-vocational activities and leadership programs.

  • Demonstrates and abides by the Company Core Values and the operating principles

  • Assists in organization and implementation of the recreational/non-vocational programs and encourage trainees' participation

  • Orders and issues materials, supplies, films, and game equipment upon Supervisor's review and approval

  • Develops and operates weekly game activities

  • Assists in center sponsored trips and events

  • Coaches teams engaged in on and off center activities

  • Assists trainees in drama and other creative activities

  • Helps train trainees in recreational/non-vocational aide program

  • Insures that all programs comply with Department of Labor requirements

  • Attends required staff training sessions

  • Performs other duties as assigned


Minimum: Associates of Arts degree in relevant field, or one year's experience working with youth.

Preferred: One year of experience in a recreational/non-vocational program.

General Information: In order to perform the essential job functions of this position, candidate must have regular attendance.

Knowledge Required: Thorough knowledge of a variety of recreational/non-vocational activities. Ability to obtain lifeguard certification as required. Must obtain and maintain CPR/First Aid certification. Ability to relate effectively with trainee population. Ability to motivate and inspire trainees. Candidate must have regular attendance.

All post offer candidates must complete and pass a background check and drug screen.

NON-CAREER PART-TIME/SEASONAL Under supervision, carries out programs for both indoor and outdoor activities for persons with physical, intellectual, and developmental disabilities. Works directly with participants to encourage enthusiasm and create positive experiences. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all the listed duties and/or may be required to perform related duties as needed: * Assists in leading, teaching and conducting recreation activities, such as arts and crafts, various games and sports, social recreation, nature activities, camping, community singing and informal music activities. * Assists in organizing socials, tournaments, dances, festivals, camping trips, field trips, and special events. * Assists in the preparation of programs, announcements, bulletins and related materials needed to promote program activities. * Assists participants with feeding, bathroom needs, lifting, and other services, as needed. QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: * Basic first aid practices. Ability to: * Speak and write effectively. * Establish and maintain effective relationships with the public and other employees. Skills in: * Demonstrating patience, energy, and enthusiasm. EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION Experience: None Education: High school graduation or GED equivalency. SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS Age: Must be at least 18 years old by time of appointment. Physical Demands and Work Environment: The conditions herein are typically required of an incumbent to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
