Position Information

Recreation Specialist I (Botanical Gardens) (SR-20)

$4,690/month

Organizes and directs a city-wide program in a recreational specialty; conducts in-service training classes in the specialized activity; and performs other related duties as required.

Current Vacancy: There is one (1) vacancy with the

Department of Parks and Recreation, Urban Forestry Division. This position is located at Wahiawa Botanical Garden and Foster Botanical Garden and is responsible for planning, organizing, coordinating, and directing educational and interpretive activities for the botanical gardens, as well as functioning as the Volunteer Coordinator.

Special Work Requirements: Able to work on sometimes slippery walkways, surfaces, and trails; must work weekends, evenings, and holidays for programs and events, and to staff visitor center.

May be required to assist in emergency response during storms or other disasters. May serve as Disaster Response Worker during declared emergencies.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:

Equivalent to graduation from a regionally-accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in recreation, physical education, group work, or a related field.

Education obtained outside of the United States must be comparable to a degree earned at a regionally-accredited college/university in the United States. In order to receive credit for the education, a foreign credential evaluation (FCE) must be provided. We also reserve the right to request further information about your academic program, evidence of comparability, or an original transcript.

Substitution: Work experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis. Such experience must have provided the knowledge, skills, and analytical ability normally gained from attainment of a bachelor's degree.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:

Two (2) years of professional recreation experience, one (1) year of which shall have been in planning, organizing, coordinating, and directing botanical, horticultural, or environmental interpretive educational and recreational programs, or comparable programs, including working with volunteers.

Such experience must have demonstrated knowledge of policies, principles, plans, tools and techniques of recreation; instructional methods, plans, procedures, and techniques; group behavior; principles and practices of supervision; policies, principles, plans, tools and techniques of the specialty area of recreation. Additionally, such experience must have demonstrated the ability to plan, organize, promote, administer and evaluate recreational activities and programs.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENT:

  • Valid driver's license (Type 3/automobile), prior to appointment;

  • Valid American Red Cross First Aid certificate, or equivalent, prior to completion of probation; and

  • Valid American Red Cross or American Heart Association Adult, Child, and Infant CPR and AED certificate, to include care for choking and obstructed airway, or equivalent, prior tocompletion of probation.

The above licenses and certificates must be maintained on a current basis thereafter.
