The City of Coronado is accepting applications for

Recreation Specialist

Current Openings are at the Community Center Front Desk and Operations, Rock Climbing Wall, John D.

Spreckels (Senior) Center Front Desk and Operations, Parks and Beaches, Facility Rental and Event Set Up, Youth Programs (Classes and Camps) and Inclusion Staff.

This posting will be used to fill multiple vacancies across divisions. Please complete the questionnaire to indicate your area of interest. The working hours are varied and flexible; (not to exceed 29 hours per week or 1,000 hours per fiscal year).

The Position

Front Desk & Daily Operations: Employee would be based out of the Coronado Community Center or John D.

Spreckels Center and would provide phone and in-person customer service, register patrons for programs, and provide general information. This position may also include preparing event spaces for usage and maintenance of the center.

Youth Programs and Camps: Employee would be based out of the Community Center, Club Room, or outdoor spaces. This position may assist, develop and lead recreation activities for youth including, after school, preschool, teen activities and camps.

Adult Programs/Senior Programs: Employee would be based out of the Community Center or John D.

Spreckels Center and would work with adults and seniors, providing customer service to patrons utilizing the center and may assist, develop, and lead recreation programs.

Skatepark: Employee would be based at the Skatepark and would work with visiting patrons, running events and programs, registering patrons, and maintaining a safe environment.

Inclusion: Employee may be based at multiple locations assisting patrons with disabilities with activities.

Rental Event Staff: Employee would be based out of the Community Center, John D.

Spreckels Center or Club Room to set up, take down, supervise and be a staff liaison during rental events.

Facility Rentals: Employee would be based out of the Community Center to assist with facility rentals including providing in-person and phone customer service, set up, take down, supervision and be a staff liaison during rental events.

Day Trips: Employee would drive trips for participants of all ages to local sites and amusements for all ages. Possession of a CDL license with passenger endorsement required, but training can be provided.

Boathouse: Employee would be based out of the Coronado Boathouse and would assist with kayak and stand-up paddleboard rentals, provide instruction on the proper fit and use of lifejackets and paddles, assist with scheduled activities, and provide general information and registration support.

Tech: Employee would be based out of the John D.

Spreckels Center and would provide tutorials, programs, and support to patrons seeking training on cellphone, computer, and tablet use.

Parks & Beaches: Employee would be based out of the John D.

Spreckels Center and would work mainly in the field overseeing events, user groups, and programs in Coronado's parks and beaches.

Media and Marketing: Employee would be based out of the Community Center but may also work in the field to capture events and activities. This position would boost social media outreach, marketing programs, and provide support for department special projects.

Rockwall: Employee will be based out the Community Center to guide and instruct rockwall participants ages 6 to adult on safe rock climbing techniques.

The following tasks are typical for positions in this classification. Any single position may not perform all of these tasks and/or may perform similar related tasks not listed here:

  • Organize, lead or teach a specialized recreation program, activity or class such as dance, gymnastics, sports, teens, special events, inclusion, preschool or day camp or other recreational activities.

  • Promote and coordinate a specific program, service, activity or class; prepare program event and facility marketing materials including news releases, flyers, schedules of events, pamphlets, and brochures.

  • Observe necessary precautions to ensure the safety of program or class participants; monitor and inspect assigned facilities for needed maintenance; clean facilities as needed.

  • Develop program or class curriculum and maintain a calendar of activities; prepare program or class activity brochures for public distribution; modify program or class activities and schedules as required.

  • Supervise and monitor the behavior of program or class participants; enforce applicable rules and regulations; provide appropriate disciplinary measures as needed.

  • Evaluate assigned programs or classes for needed supplies and equipment; order or obtain supplies as needed; issue supplies and equipment to participants; provide 7. Monitor program or class performance; recommend and implement modifications to systems and procedures.

  • Maintain records and develop reports concerning new or ongoing programs or classes and program and class effectiveness.

  • Supervise, direct and coordinate the work of subordinate personnel.

  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Develop survey instruments; conduct surveys of program or class participants to determine participant needs; interpret and record survey results; implement or adjust programs or classes based on survey findings.

Minimum Requirements

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: At least three years of increasingly responsible experience in a specialized recreation program area.

Education/Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in area of specialization, recreation, leisure studies or a related field.

Licenses and Certificates: Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License with a safe driving record.

Designated positions require the possession, or ability to obtain, a valid California Commercial Driver's license with Passenger Endorsement. Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid first aid certificate. Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid CPR certificate.

Knowledge of:

Operations, services, and activities of a specialized recreation program, activity or class such as dance, gymnastics, painting, cooking, crafts, photography or other recreational activities.

Principles and practices of recreation and leisure services program development and implementation.

Methods and techniques of planning, organizing, implementing, and directing assigned recreation programs or class.

Rules and equipment used in assigned specialized recreational activities.

Methods and techniques of first aid and CPR.

Appropriate safety precautions and procedures within the area of assignment.

Principles and practices of record keeping.

Marketing theories, principles, and practices and their application to the assigned recreation program.

Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.

Ability to:

Develop and promote specialized programs or classes in assigned recreation area.

Coordinate and direct specialized recreation programs or classes.

Elicit community and organizational support for assigned recreation programs or classes.

Effectively handle and diffuse disruptive behavior among program participants.

Respond to emergency situations and administer first aid and CPR as necessary.

Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public.

Interpret and explain City policies and procedures.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Supervise, direct, and coordinate the work of lower-level staff.

Environment: Incumbents may be exposed to inclement weather conditions, may work at indoor or outdoor recreational facilities, and may travel from site to site.

Other Factors: Incumbents may be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends. Incumbents may be required to travel outside City boundaries to attend meetings.
