Under the direction of either the Facilities Supervisor or the Landscape Management Director, the employee is responsible for either (1) the supervision of ball fields and grounds maintenance crews or (2) the supervision of buildings. Inspects work activities for quality and completion of all work. Provides leadership and technical coaching to subordinates.

Examples of Responsibilities

  • Make work assignments; instructs crew in work methods and procedures; lays out work and demonstrates the proper use of material and equipment; performs more difficult talks relating to the project.

  • Leads and participates in the operation of various landscape equipment including landscape tractor with front-end loader; performs and schedules preventive maintenance and repairs to equipment such as cleaning and checking the water, grease, oil, and tires.

  • Inspects park areas or facilities for repairs, notes conditions, and schedules repair work; consults with manager on scheduling, staff assignments, and purchase of materials.

  • May replace flower beds, trees, grass, shrubs, and other foliage; participates in pruning; orders correct type and amount of materials, as needed, and ensures the delivery of these materials.

  • Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turn around times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively to provide quality seamless customer service.

  • Delegates work assignments to crews.

  • Ensures that all work is completed on a timely basis.

  • Ensures that workers have necessary tools to perform job responsibilities.

  • Ensures that department vehicles are maintained to city standards.

  • Ensures that workers have materials to perform their job responsibilities.

  • Performs other duties as required.

  • Ensures workers are following all safety practices.

  • Assists workers with projects, to meet quality and time requirements.

  • May require occasional overtime and work on weekends.

  • Must wear appropriate safety attire and follow all safety precautions.

  • Work around dirt, dust, germs, chemicals, cleaning supplies, and unsanitary conditions at times.

  • Most job duties are performed outside during all seasons.

  • Job requires slip resistance/steel toe footwear to be worn during work hours.

Minimal Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) highly preferred.

  • Reading skills to understand written instructions and product labels.

  • Must maintain a strong driving record for city insurance purpose and record may be periodically checked by the City.

  • Strong experience in field maintenance and building maintenance.

  • Formal training in landscape in field and park maintenance or building maintenance and park.

  • Strong work history of dependability and performance.

  • Training in supervision and management.

  • Experience leading and coaching others and supervising their work.

  • National Recreation and Park Association and landscape certifications preferred, with inspector certifications highly preferred.

Supplemental Information

Technical Skills

  • Considerable knowledge of landscaping maintenance, repair, construction, and

horticulture projects.

  • Knowledge of fertilization application procedures.

  • Knowledge of ball field and grounds maintenance procedures.

  • Knowledge of plant diseases and insecticides.

  • Knowledge of grounds equipment and supplies.

  • Knowledge of occupational health and safety, including accident causation and prevention.

  • Verbal skills to communicate with supervisors, employees, and general public.

  • Reading skills to understand written instructions, diagrams, and procedures as well as Math skills to measure line distances on ball fields, quote and purchase supplies, etc.

  • Performs other duties as required.

  • Facility painting and finishing skills.

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.

  • Journey level skills with park and landscape maintenance and inspection and/or building maintenance.

Physical Capabilities:

  • Work requires the physical ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, often under adverse weather conditions.

  • Includes repetitious lifting of weight up to fifty (50) pounds, repetitious stepping up and down (approximately 18" to 24") and repetitious bending and stooping, walking, standing, and occasional climbing.

  • See well enough to observe employees and perform maintenance tasks.

  • Hear well enough to communicate in person and by telephone.

  • Speak well enough to give clear instructions to workers.

  • Use of hands and fingers to write and operate equipment.

  • Ability to see well enough to observe employee's activities and inspect facilities (corrective lenses acceptable).

  • Ability to be mobile in order to move various equipment and supplies.

  • Ability to bend, climb, and stand in order to observe and inspect facilities.

  • Ability to hear well enough to understand normal conversation and know how to use radio and telephone (hearing aid acceptable).

  • Ability to stand on feet and perform repetitive work up to eight hours per day.

  • Ability to see well enough to drive vehicles and equipment (corrective lenses are acceptable).
