Summer Recreation Leaders are functional staff who plan and lead activities for the 2024 Summer Recreation Program. Recreation Leaders are support staff, ensuring all patrons and staff are safe and the activities conducted are age appropriate. Recreation Leaders also act as the lead customer service member to the public. Recreation Leaders report to a Recreation Coordinator or a Recreation Programmer, and communication between the two is constant and fluid. This is a part-time position with up to 30-40 hours per week during the months of June
July and opportunities to work youth sports and special events during the months of August
May.

Essential Functions

Assists Recreation Coordinator or Recreation Programmer to prepare and coordinate youth city programs, classes and/or activities, which may include procuring supplies, scheduling entertainment, setting up sites, monitoring events, and/or performing other related activities.
Performs tasks related to routine day-to-day operations, assisting and organizing the setup, coordination and tear down of programs, activities, leagues and special events for the Summer Recreation Program.
Ensures proper maintenance of recreational facilities and equipment to provide a safe and sanitary environment, and notifies supervisor of any problems and/or concerns.
Ensures City policies, procedures, rules, and regulations are strictly enforced; responds to and resolves complaints; advises and provides assistance to individuals and groups on related recreational problems; assists the general public and responds to their questions, comments, and/or concerns.
Exercises responsibility for the equipment, materials, and personnel used in a given activity; supervises the issuance, use, care, and maintenance of recreation supplies and equipment.
Maintains discipline, order, security, and crowd control at activity site or facility.
Applies resuscitation techniques and first aid as necessary.
Assists with basic maintenance of buildings, grounds, and facilities, and reports issues that may need work orders.
Submits a variety of daily, weekly, and monthly reports to Recreation Coordinator or Recreation Programmer on issues including number of participants, accomplishments, and improvement areas.
Maintains regular attendance and punctuality.
Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Knowledge of:
Principles and practices of public recreation
Customer service principles
First aid, CPR, and necessary safety precautions utilized in recreation
A variety of active and passive game activities suitable for children, and adolescents
Knowledge in planning and leading activities for children ages 6-13
Time management and organizational practices and procedures
Ability to:
Implement recreational programs, special events, and activities
Work cooperatively with youths of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds
Work as a team player with other City staff
Exercise resourcefulness when meeting new problems
Plan, organize, implement, and supervise recreation activities
Communicate and use interpersonal skills to interact with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc., to sufficiently exchange or convey information and/or receive work direction
Education and/or Experience
Must be at least 15 years of age and have experience interacting effectively with grade school age children. Some college or equivalent experience preferred. Experience in after-school programs or leading programs for groups of a wide range of grade levels is a plus. A valid Driver's License is preferred.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Must provide proof of CPR Certification Card and First Aid Certification Card within one month of hire date.
