RECREATION LEADER IV (Summer Camp)

$21.06 - $25.61 per Hour

Work up to 28 hours per week

Seasonal position (Part-Time/Temporary)

Season starts 06/01/2024; Season ends 08/31/2024

The Parks and Recreation Department oversees Parks and Programs, REACH, Senior Services, Contract Classes, Media and Communications, Special Events, Transportation, and the Pico Rivera Golf Course.

The amenities provided by the Parks and Recreation Department are enjoyed by thousands of people every year. The amenities include 100 acres of parks and open spaces, swimming pool, athletic fields, walking paths, Senior Center, and batting cages.

The Position

This position will assist the recreation supervisor and management staff with administrative and supervisory duties. Incumbents in this position may also be expected to perform lower level recreation leader work and assist in the training of less experienced personnel.

This position will be required to work varied shifts between 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM, Monday through Friday, and must be available to work early mornings, late evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays based on department needs.

Essential Duties

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed by employees in this classification. Functions may be added, modified or removed to meet the needs of the City:

  • Lead assigned hourly recreation staff.

  • Plan, lead and supervise day camp activities, and the use of City equipment and facilities.

  • Plan and coordinate weekly activities and field trips with Supervisor.

  • Maintain inventory of program supplies.

  • Clean and organize camp site on a weekly basis.

  • Prepare weekly parent activity schedules and field trip reminders.

  • Ensure staff are implementing activities as scheduled and providing appropriate supervision of participants.

  • Ensure safe and orderly environment for program staff and participants during program operation.

  • Respond to parents and general public with concerns about programs and services.

  • Assist Supervisor with specials projects and related duties as assigned.

  • Interpret, explain and reinforce departmental policies, enforce safety rules, and provide quality customer service.

  • Display strong and professional customer service skills.

  • Perform maintenance duties and other required duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Must be available to work varied shifts including Monday through Friday, between 6:30 AM - 6:30 PM.

  • Must be available to work early mornings, late evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

  • Must be available to attend in service training and camp meeting on May 31 and June 15.

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

  • Ability to understand community values, traditions, hierarchy structures and roles.

  • Ability to use communication as a management tool supporting the department's mission and strategic plan.

  • Ability to work independently and in a group.

  • Ability to motivate assigned staff to become leaders and agents of change.

  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, both orally and in writing.

  • Display a commitment to the recreation profession.

  • Ability to speak Spanish is desired.

Additionally, applicants must have the ability to:

  • Applicant must have a general operating knowledge of a personal computer, calculator and other office machines necessary to carry out assigned duties.

  • Handle challenging customer service situations and provide positive participant experiences.

  • Establish and foster positive working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including peers, the public, other City Staff and participants.

Experience and Education

  • Applicants must submit a copy of their high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent with application materials.

  • Two (2) years college course work in recreation or a related field is desired.

  • Applicant must have a minimum of three (3) years of recreation experience working with the public; leadership experience is desired.

Year(s) of experience refers to full-time work; part-timework is considered on a prorated basis (To ensure full credit for work experience, indicate number of hours worked per week.)

PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

The position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment. The need to lift, carry, and push tools, equipment, and supplies weighing 50 pounds or more is also required. Acute hearing is also required in providing customer service to public and/or assistance in facility, classroom, or outdoors. Will also be working in outdoor area and may be exposed to loud noises and extreme weather conditions.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Candidates must possess a valid California Class C Driver's License* throughout the course of employment and/or California Identification Card. (*City employees are registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles, Employee Pull Notice Program)

  • Proof of car insurance (to be eligible for mileage reimbursement), if applicable.

  • Must possess (within 30 days of hire) and maintain American Red Cross (ARC) or American Heart Association (AHA) Infant/Child/Adult CPR, Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) and Community First Aid and Safety certifications (online certifications will not be accepted).

Veteran's credit will amount to 10 points to be added to the interview score. Proof of honorable discharge must be submitted with the application materials in order to be eligible for veteran's credit. Veterans who wish to utilize this credit must have served on a full-time basis (not reserve or auxiliary) in the armed forces for a minimum of six months (180 days).

Employees in this position are regularly scheduled to work up to 28 hours per week and are not eligible for inclusion in the regular, permanent employment service of the City and do not receive medical benefits. Such employees serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority and are classified as at-will employees.

Physical/Background Check

Upon conditional offer the selected candidate will be subject to background and reference checks and will be required to satisfactorily complete a post offer physical examination including a drug screen at the City's expense. Not applicable for Promotion.

Part-Time Represented

Holidays

  • The City agrees to designate up to 6 paid holidays for represented part-time hourly workers with some exceptions, per memorandum of understanding.

Sick Leave

  • 40 hours under the California Paid Sick Leave Law for employees working for at least 30 days within a year and satisfying a 90-day employment period.

Leave Time

  • Entitled to accrue leave time beginning on first day of work.

Retirement

  • Hourly employees will be enrolled in the Nationwide 401(a) Plan. The City matches the employees' contribution of 3.75%. CalPERS members will be enrolled as a CalPERS member under the State of California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) at the 2% at 60 formula for current CalPERS members and 2% at 62 for new CalPERS Public Employees' Pension Reform Act (PEPRA) members, as defined by AB340. Effective July 1, 2023, PEPRA members pay 7.5% of the employees' portion to CalPERS. Current CalPERS members (Tier II) pay 7% of employee's portion to CalPERS. PERS determines whether an employee is a Classic or New PERS member.

The City of Pico Rivera does not participate in the Social Security system.
