Position Details

The Parks & Recreation Department is looking to hire a STEM teacher to prepare lessons and materials to provide instruction to participants in various assigned subjects in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math.

Note: This is a non-benefited position that performs its duties in support of the Parks, Arts, and Recreation Department.

Primary Duties

Depending on area of assignment, work is generally performed in a standard classroom environment or studio which may involve the use of various tools, supplies, and chemicals related to the subject or discipline. Exposure to all weather and traffic conditions when traveling to other locations, or facilities, or providing instruction in an outdoor setting.

  • Presents and teaches subject matter through formal and/or informal methods to introduce or enhance knowledge of topic offerings; identifies participants needs, answers questions, and provides constructive feedback to provide instruction and guidance.

  • Plans, organizes, and delivers lessons and materials in various facilities and offsite locations, including outdoors, to support assigned programs; travels to various locations, which may be outside of city limits, to deliver programming and instruction.

  • Maintains clean, safe, and orderly work area(s) to promote positive learning environments.

  • Identifies problems or conflicts, provides resolution within delegated authority, and/or refers issues to appropriate staff for resolution as necessary and directed.

  • Conducts surveys, evaluates, and assesses needs and expectations to increase and promote interest in applicable programs and offerings.

  • Distributes appropriate safety information to comply with established requirements and guidelines.

  • Provides information and instruction to participants during assigned sessions, and for the duration of the time allotted, to ensure class objectives are met.

  • Ensures the appropriate condition of the instructional area to ensure safety and facilitate a positive learning environment.

  • Prepares required materials and supplies in advance; maintains professionalism, enthusiasm, and tact in all contact with the public, program participants, and other employees to foster a positive public image.

  • Requests supplies and equipment as needed to maintain appropriate inventory levels.

  • Carries out job duties in a safe manner in accordance with applicable policies and procedures; follows safety procedures; identifies unsafe situations and work hazards, corrects them if possible, and reports issues of concern to the appropriate supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma, or equivalent.

  • Previous work experience or education in fields of science, technology, engineering, and math.

REQUIRED LICENSES

  • Possess and retain a valid state driver's license without impending loss at time of appointment.

  • Possess or has the ability to obtain a valid CPR and First Aid certificate within three (3) weeks of appointment.
