Job Description Summary:
DANCE INSTRUCTOR
The Dance Instructor role provides support and leadership in all aspects of the Health and Wellness program. They lead, instruct and motivate participants from youth to older adults in group dance classes. They work with and provide modifications for people of all ages and skill levels. They are responsible for coaching participants through safe and effective dance programming and technique including motivating energetically, providing feedback, assessing strengths and weaknesses, clearly communicating, and creating a community of wellness.

DANCE INSTRUCTOR
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Group Instruction:
Acts as dance instructor by teaching in all areas of dance program where needed to all ages from youth to older adults. May also teach specialized forms of dance based on qualifications.
Provide a learning experience that is healthy, positive, enriching and emphasizes the joy of dance as an art form.
Create classes where techniques are clearly communicated, demonstrated, and progress logically in interest and energy.
Create choreography as needed for session dance classes and special events.
Design class programming that has an appropriate balance of dance technique and choreographed dances.
Distributes information to staff and patrons, answers questions.
Evaluates students, recommends placement/promotions through the program.
Share in responsibility of creating a welcoming and fun studio environment in respect to safety, security, stereo equipment maintenance, cleanliness, and temperature.
Confirm that all participants are registered. Communicate to the appropriate person in a timely manner the status and attendance of assigned classes.
Serves as an instructor for the youth dance camps held at any of the Recreation Centers during summers and school holidays/days off.
Performs related duties as required to meet the needs of the Fitness and Parks and Recreation programs including accurate completion of all required paperwork.

Is an active part of the fitness team, supporting and subbing for coworkers and arranging for substitutes if unable to teach.
Continues education in the field, maintains certification(s) and job knowledge to remain current with trends, teaching techniques and attends all in-house training and staff meetings.
Responsible for knowing and complying with all city and department policies; participating in professional development and training; and adhering to attendance and workplace attire policies.
Safety:
Takes proper safety precautions to ensure participant safety and prevent accidents. Is responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment.
Uses all required safety equipment and follows all safety regulations, policies and procedures.
Reports all accidents and damage to city property immediately (within 24 hours).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience instructing and/or knowledge in a variety of dance forms including but not limited to Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop, Social Dance programs and specialty classes.
Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification.
Experience in dance class instruction. Ability to teach group dance classes to all age groups ages youth (2+) to older adults.
Physical ability to demonstrate the dance techniques and steps being taught. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology relative to safe dance education.
Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification.
Have and maintain acceptable background information, including criminal conviction history
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
College degree in dance or related field, i.e., physical education, recreation, exercise physiology, music, theatre, etc. or equivalent training.
At least five (5) years of extensive experience in working with a dance program.
Experience teaching advanced dance techniques (i.e.: Pointe Ballet)
Additional nationally recognized certification or training in addition to base certification.
Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
