Duties

Summary

This position is located at the VA Medical Center in Mountain Home, TN. The primary purpose of this position is provide recreation, music and/or art therapy activities for patients throughout the Medical Center.

Responsibilities

Plans and carries out recreation, music or art therapy activities for patients throughout the Medical Center;
Evaluates the history, interest, aptitude, and skills of patients in order to develop appropriate individual treatment plans;
Coordinate a wide range of activities with various staff, service organizations, and community groups in the development of appropriate activities to support patient treatment;
Serves as a representative of his/her division on patient treatment units with the responsibility for ensuring that patient treatment objectives are consistent with his/her overall treatment process;
Develops treatment objectives and subsequent treatment plans and maintains the flexibility necessary to adapt those plans to the patient's emotional condition and/or physical limitations;
Receives a written referral from the unit physician and/or follows division policy of caseload distribution and reviews it for appropriateness for treatment. Through evaluation, initiates all required medical record documentation to support expected outcomes. Develops a schedule that, in his/her judgment, will most appropriately meet the extended needs of the patients served;
Arranges meals, transportation, and other details involving off-station treatment programs;
Selects, adapts, and/or adjusts recreation/creative art modalities in accordance with rehabilitation goals and modifies techniques and develops new approaches as necessary to ensure the realization of patient treatment goals;
Develops and maintains professional standards of therapeutic recreation/creative arts therapies; and
Performs other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am until 4:30 pm.

Qualifications

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
AND
LICENSE REQUIREMENT: Requires a valid state driver's license.

BASIC EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: A bachelor's or higher degree in recreational therapy (transcripts required); a bachelor's or higher degree in a related field involving therapeutic emphasis or concentration that included at least 36 semester hours in therapeutic courses which included 18 semester hours of therapeutic recreation courses and 18 semester hours that include a combination of abnormal psychology, physiology, human anatomy and development, disabilities and general recreation (transcripts required); or are you an employee who is currently assigned to a position in this occupational series as of September 2017, which meets the basic requirements for this position (latest SF50 required).
AND
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GS-10: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in federal service that has provided you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of a Recreation Creative Arts Therapist. Qualifying specialized experience includes: applying the concepts, procedures, and techniques of recreation therapy; performing recreation and creative arts therapy programming, completion of assessments, interacting with core team members, developing treatment plans, creating and administering therapeutic activities and safety procedures; creating therapeutic activities, coordinating treatment plans, and completing documentation. Your experience must be detailed in your resume to receive credit.
OR
Or 2.5 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree with a major field of study directly related to recreation therapy or in a creative arts therapy field (art therapy, dance therapy, music therapy, or psychodrama) or a major in an appropriate subject-matter field with therapeutic emphasis or concentration.
OR
Or an equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate education as described for the GS-10 to meet the total requirements for this position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. Your experience must be detailed and transcripts are required.

Physical Requirements:
This position involves walking, standing, sitting, running, bending, lifting, climbing, participation in athletic events and driving mother vehicles.

It also involves (re)positioning severely disabled patients with knowledge and use of safe patient transfer techniques at times and assisting patients in ambulation. If the incumbent is involved in facilitating the Aquatics Therapy Program, some of the above mentioned demands will be done in water.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
