The Kyle Parks and Recreation Department is seeking a dedicated and dynamic individual to assist in the planning, development, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of inclusive programs and events designed for individuals with disabilities. This role ensures that inclusive and adaptive elements are integrated throughout all programming and event execution within the department.

The Recreation Coordinator will utilize assessments and evaluations to address physical, cognitive, emotional, and social challenges for individuals with medical, psychiatric, developmental, or sensory impairments. This position requires strong collaboration with city departments, community organizations, and stakeholders to enhance program impact, promote accessibility, and improve quality of life, independence, and social engagement for participants.

  • Plan, coordinate, and implement recreational programs and events tailored for individuals of various ages and abilities.
  • Develop programs that promote physical activity, mental wellness, educational opportunities, and socialization.
  • Ensure programs are inclusive and accessible for families of diverse backgrounds and abilities.
  • Conduct regular evaluations of programs to assess effectiveness and gather feedback from participants.
  • Develop, organize, and implement inclusive programs and events, for example, Special Olympics athletic teams, All Abilities Dances, Social Squad program, and new program and event initiatives, that encourage physical activity, personal growth, social interaction, and enjoyment for individuals with diverse disabilities.
  • Squad that promotes physical activity, personal development, socialization, and fun for the diverse population of people with disabilities.
  • Build and maintain relationships with families, youth, seniors, community organizations, and local service providers to promote participation in recreational programs.
  • Organize and attend outreach events to recruit participants and raise awareness of available inclusive and adaptive services.
  • Coordinate partnerships with schools, senior living facilities, community centers, and other relevant entities to expand program offerings.
  • Supervise and train part-time or volunteer staff assisting programs and events to ensure adherence to safety protocols and program goals and objectives.
  • Assist in the development and management of program budgets, ensuring that programs stay within financial constraints.
  • Secure and manage necessary resources, equipment, and supplies for recreational activities.
  • Explore and apply for funding opportunities to support the expansion of inclusive and adaptive services.
  • Ensure all recreational activities comply with safety standards and regulations.
  • Implement risk management practices to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants.
  • Maintain accurate records for program participation, incidents, and evaluations.
  • Ensures all work is done in a productive, safe, and effective working environment.
  • Prepare weekly and monthly reports and maintain revenue and expenditures reports on assigned programs; may order supplies and equipment for programs.
  • Plan, coordinate, implement, and assist with Parks & Recreation sponsored or co-sponsored community and special events.
  • Provide assistance with community events and holiday activities and support citywide special events by serving on event committees.
  • Utilization of the web-based software for program registration, rentals/reservations and information for events.
  • Assist the Assistant Director with preparing, updating, and providing needed information to the community.

Miscellaneous:

  • Attend staff, committee, and council meetings and give presentations as needed.
  • Provide support at various departmental programs/activities.
  • Contribute to team effort by performing other duties as assigned.
  • Drive vehicle throughout the City and surrounding areas to make inspections, check on programs and attend meetings.
  • Assist with creation of promotional material for programs and events.

Community Relations Experience:

  • Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple programs simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage with families, youth, seniors, staff, and community partners
  • Provides customers with information over the telephone and in person; responds to and resolve citizens' complaints concerning programs, activities, and the Parks & Recreation Department.
  • Maintains desired working relationship with Parks & Recreation Director, Deputy Director, Assistant Director and City Management.
  • Maintains a professional working relationship with other federal, state, and local parks and recreation agencies.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Thorough knowledge of parks & recreation administration and methods.
  • Thorough knowledge of recreation programming and management-related experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable state, federal, and local laws involving any playground safety or parks and recreation specifications.
  • Ability to lead and direct the activities of a large organization.
  • Ability to maintain cooperative relationships with other city officials, the general public, and the news media.
  • Ability to remain calm and act resourcefully in an emergency.
  • Ability to operate the following: recreation software, computer, printer, telephone, copy machine, calculator, and vehicle.
  • Ability to multi-task while working with tight deadlines and shifting priorities
  • Ability to organize work for timely completion
  • Ability to regularly attend work and arrive punctually for designated work schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays

Formal Education:

  • A four-year Bachelor's degree in Parks & Recreation Administration, Physical Education, Public Administration, or a related field.
  • Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS)

Experience:

  • 2 years' experience coordinating and implementing programs serving individuals with disabilities.
  • 1 year of experience of progressive leadership experience in municipal parks and recreation programs.

Other Requirements:

  • Valid Texas Driver's License by date of hire and insurable driving record.

Preferred:

  • First Aid and CPR/AED Certifications or be able to obtain within 6 months of employment
  • Certified Parks and Recreation Professional Certification (CPRP)
