Job Summary

The Recreation Coordinator II position includes the planning, scheduling, organizing, logistical support, and maintaining high-standard program opportunities year-round.

Under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor, this position organizes, creates, coordinates, and manages community special events and programming including but not limited to concert series, large seasonal events, 5Ks, volunteer coordination, and paddle boats. This position acts as an on-site coordinator providing excellent customer service while supporting event staff and volunteers.

Starting Salary Range: The starting salary is between the minimum and midpoint of the range. Candidates will start at the minimum of the range ($24.06 per hour) unless their skills, experience, education, or other factors exceed the qualifications for the position.

Essential Job Functions

  • Coordinates, implements, and manages recreation programming, including, but not limited to, overseeing daily operations of recreation programs, assisting with supervision and training of seasonal staff, coordinating the use of Parks and Recreation and needed school facilities, registering participants, budgeting and accounting for registration fees and program expenses.

  • Monitors registrations and attendance of classes and programs.

  • Negotiates and coordinates contracts and agreements for recreation programming.

  • Coordinates and maintains program registrations, rosters, and communication with contractors as needed.

  • Assists with the overall evaluation and implementation of programs, in conjunction with class instructors and volunteers.

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of programs and recommend modifications to existing programs.

  • Assist in preparing purchase orders and purchases supplies and materials for recreation programs, facilities, and activities.

  • Assists in creating, distributing, and record-keeping marketing, newsletter, public information, and funding materials.

  • Support other department functions as assigned.

  • Provides internal and external customer service and maintains relationships.

  • Regular, predictable, and punctual attendance is required

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Parks and Recreation or a closely related field and two (2) years of experience in general recreation or;

  • Associate degree in Parks and Recreation or a related field of study and three (3) years of experience in general recreation programming.

Licensure or Certification Requirements

  • Canoe or kayak instructor certification (or the ability to obtain certification within 12 months of employment). Adaptive Paddling certification or endorsement preferred.

Other

  • Minimum 18 years of age

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Basic recreation principles

  • Methods involved in organizing, conducting, promoting, and supervising recreation activities.

  • Program development

  • All computer applications and hardware related to the performance of the essential functions of the job, including recreation reservation and activities software.

  • Department organization, standard operating guidelines and policies, rules, and regulations

Skill in:

  • Conflict resolution

  • Team building and engagement techniques

  • Working with different age populations

  • Cash handling and procedures

  • Communicating professionally orally and in writing with internal staff, citizens, and other departmental staff

  • Operating and maintaining all assigned equipment required to perform the essential functions of the job

Ability to: (Mental and Physical Abilities)

  • Work independently

  • Adhere to regulations, policies, and procedures required by the City of Gahanna and any other regulatory/governing bodies.

  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions

  • Lead and supervise others

  • Enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, city officials, other government agencies, social agencies, and the general public.

  • Observe participant behavior, assess its appropriateness, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.

  • Possess the strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of participants.

  • Work outside of standard business hours to include nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed based upon programming and special events.

Important Job Functions

  • Coordinates the development and implementation of program activities that align with the department's mission and desired outcomes.

  • Leads, assists with, and/or actively participates in all program areas, as assigned.

  • Maintains exceptional standards of health and safety for all participants, in all programs.

  • Maintains a high degree of accountability and confidentiality, as most of the Department relates directly to the citizens of the City of Gahanna and other surrounding areas.

  • Responds to inquiries and requests for information from residents via telephone, computer, and in person; greets participants to programs.

  • Assists in the planning and instruction of American Red Cross classes throughout the department.

  • Maintains registration and various other records.

  • All other duties as assigned by the Recreation Supervisor or Department Administration.

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
