The City of Gastonia Parks and Recreation is seeking dedicated individuals to join us as Recreation Attendants in a Part-Time role, pivotal players in fostering an atmosphere of inclusivity and fun at our facilities

As a Recreation Attendant, you'll play a vital role in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of recreational programs and events. You'll work closely with community members, organizations, and city departments to develop innovative initiatives that meet the diverse needs and interests of Gastonia residents. From sports leagues and fitness classes to cultural festivals and arts workshops, you'll have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of others.

Recreation Attendant perform a variety of duties at our amusement or recreation facility, such as scheduling use of recreation facilities, maintaining and providing equipment to participants of sporting events or recreational pursuits, or operating amusement rides and machinery. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Recreation Manager

Essential Functions/Duties

These listed job functions are typical for a position of this nature. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each function satisfactorily. Other job functions and duties may be required as assigned.

  • Daily operations of the City's pools, Skeet and Trap Range, lakefront operations, and miniature train

  • Tasks include ensuring the safety of patrons

  • Enforcing rules and regulations

  • Maintaining cleanliness of facilities

  • Collecting fees; preparing revenue reports

  • Maintaining records as required

  • Answering phones and scheduling events

  • Assisting patrons and providing exceptional customer service

  • Educating the public regarding proper use and safety measures

  • Performing routine inspections for hazards and/or damages

  • Operating machinery (miniature train; skeet and trap machines)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to understand and follow written departmental policies and procedures

  • Through knowledge of the practices, methods, and policies used in operating amusement rides, skeet and trap fields, boating, fishing, and lakefront operations

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city officials, participants, interested groups, and the general public

  • Ability to prepare and maintain financial reports, collect money, operate a cash register, and use a credit card machine

  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing

  • Ability to work independently and use sound judgement

Education/Experience/Physical Demands/Special Requirements/Additional Information

Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent

Special Conditions

  • Must possess a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving history

  • Possession of certifications or ability to become First Aid, CPR, or AED certified within first 6 months

  • Possession of certificate or ability to obtain Wild Services Shotgun Safety Certificate

The physical activity of this position includes:

  • Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized. This factor is important if the amount and kind of claim required exceed those required for ordinary locomotion.

  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces. This factor is important if the amount and kind of balancing exceed what is needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.

  • Kneeling: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.

  • Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.

  • Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.

  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

  • Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.

  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.

  • Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.

  • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.

  • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.

  • Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling.

  • Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.

  • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.

  • Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal spoken word levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make fine discriminations in sound, such as when making fine adjustments on machined parts.

  • Repetitive Motions: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

The physical requirements of this position:

  • Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

The visual acuity requirements including color, depth, perception and field of vision:

  • The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform one or more of the following: preparing and analyzing data and figures; accounting; computer terminal; using measurement devices.

The conditions the worker will be subject to in this position:

  • The worker is subject to indoor environmental conditions; protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.

  • The worker is subject to outside environmental conditions. There is no effective protection from weather.

  • The worker is subject to both environmental conditions: Activities occur inside and outside.

  • The worker is subject to extreme heat: Temperatures above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour.

  • The worker is subject to hazards: including a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat, or exposure to chemicals.
