Position Summary

Salary range for this position is: $20.37/hr. - $23.98/hr. (depending on experience)

The Recreation and Athletics Specialist 1 plans, organizes, and manages group and/or individual recreation activities that are part of a larger recreational/sports program system. Contributes in planning and monitoring of programs to help ensure their success and assists in management of the facility.

This is a permanent, part time position - 20 hours or more a week.

This position is governed by a collective bargaining agreement with representation by WFSE.

What you will be working on:

Recreation Activity Development

  • Plans, organizes directs sports and recreational activities for diverse populations in coordination with student committees, recreation clubs, commissions and social agencies. This includes but is not limited to being a consultant and advisor to student staff that promote sports activities, tournaments, games, and team sports.

  • Works in one or more skill area, directing, conducting, or instructing in programs that foster leadership development through sports, social activities, or outings.

  • Develops schedule of recreation activities to meet needs, interests, and abilities of Seattle Central and MAC members.

  • Publicizes and promotes recreational revenue/non-revenue producing recreation activities through online and hard copies advertisements.

  • Confers with other staff members to determine recreation programing for individuals and groups by participating in coordination meetings and conferences such as student service meetings, student leadership meetings and other departments that have relations with the MAC.

Planning and Monitoring

  • Prepares regular oral and quarterly written progress and adjustment reports that include items such as assessment of facilitates, evaluations of programs, and other special studies related to the impact of recreational and sports programing.

  • Administers procedures for equipment purchase and inventory; arranges for equipment repairs and maintenance.

  • Assists in planning, tracking and administration of operating budgets.

Facility Management Assistance

  • Supervises and coordinates services of staff and volunteers assigned to the recreation programs generated by the MAC and Student Development. This includes interviewing, scheduling, training, and tracking of hours.

  • Assigns, instructs, and checks the work of assigned hourly employees for both the MAC and the Tournaments and Games Team.

  • Evaluates and recommends equipment for purchase.

  • Trains students and other staff, officials, building attendants, building supervisors and volunteer for implementation of programs at the MAC or having to do with recreation on campus.

  • Provides exceptional customer service by responding to all emails, phone and in person inquires about the MAC and the college in a timely, professional, and informed manner.

  • Contribute to a culture of excellence, equity, diversity and inclusion in the workplace and in all aspects of employee improvement, leadership development, and MAC programming.

  • Take the initiative to stay relevant (or updated) on all systems, processes and procedures used by the department/ campus.

What you bring as a candidate: (Any Equivalent Combination of Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education and Experience)

  • Two years of college in recreation or equivalent. Two years of work experience in recreational or intramural sports programs may substitute for the educational requirements or equivalent education/experience.

  • Knowledge of several fields of recreational activities including specialized knowledge in at least two broad areas such as sports, games and social activities.

  • Ability to plan, organize and lead institution recreation programs or direct part of a recreation program; adapt recitation policies, methods and techniques to specific operational situations, supervise and train others, establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees; establish and maintain effective records and reporting system.

Physical Requirements:

The Position

  • Typically works in an office environment and uses a computer, telephone and other office equipment as needed to Perform duties. The noise level in the work environment is typical of that of an office.

  • Encounters frequent interruptions throughout the workday.

  • Is regularly required to provide 1:1 support, present to small groups, and work at a computer exercising repetitive hand motion with or without reasonable accommodation.
