Position Summary

Thousands of Minnesota kids need help getting ready for Kindergarten and you can make all the difference. Offer your time and talent as a tutor and be more for preschool students.

As a Preschool Literacy Tutor you'll spend your days helping children ages 3-5 to talk, read, write, sing and play in order to develop early literacy skills and get ready for Kindergarten. Embedded in a classroom, you'll work closely with a teacher to enhance daily literacy activities and help students build both skills and confidence. With great training and onsite coaching, you'll be ready to make an impact.

Students make the most progress when you are there, so our tutors serve during school hours and are needed for the whole school year. We are currently recruiting for the 2019-20 school year. Tutors have the option of beginning in August 2019, September 2019, October 2019 or January 2020.

This is an AmeriCorps member position with Minnesota Reading Corps. Although the earnings are modest, the rewards are great! You'll join an amazing group of more than 1,000 Minnesota tutors, determined to help students be more.

What to Expect

  • Be the literacy support for a classroom of preschool learners spend your days helping children play rhyming games, write their names and learn letter sounds.

  • Be the reason students are ready for Kindergarten.

  • Be the reason struggling students build their confidence and skills.

  • Be ready to grow by participating in on-site coaching sessions two times per month to review student progress and get feedback.

  • Be impactful by participating in training and ongoing professional development.

  • Be the motivation and represent Reading Corps at school-sponsored activities (e.g., family night) to help build awareness of Reading Corps and early literacy.

  • Be an ambassador of the program by sharing your experience with the wider community.

Perks as a Tutor

Give your time as a tutor and you'll receive a scalable perks package based on your time commitment of 35, 25, or 18 hours per week.

Perks at 35 Hours a Week:

  • Stipend (paid every two weeks) - $445

  • Education Award - $4,266*

  • Federal Student Loan Forbearance & Interest Repayment

  • Individual Health Insurance (premium 100% paid)

  • Child Care Assistance (based on family size and income)

Perks at 25 Hours a Week:

  • Stipend (paid every two weeks) - $318
  • Education Award - $3,047*

Perks at 18 Hours a Week:

  • Stipend (paid every two weeks) - $242

  • Education Award - $2,321*

  • Federal Student Loan Forbearance & Interest Repayment

  • The Segal AmeriCorps Education Award can be used to pay tuition or repay qualified student loans. Individuals 55+ may gift their award to their child, grandchild or foster child.

What it Takes

Great tutors come from all walks of life. Whether you are 18 or 85, the most important qualification is a desire to help children succeed. That said, you also need to meet the following minimum qualifications by the time you begin your service.

  • Are dependable and have a history of good attendance

  • Able to understand and follow instructions

  • Are energized by young learners and want to help them discover new things.

  • Eager to work collaboratively with the classroom teaching team.

  • Have basic computer skills (like email and navigating online)

  • Can speak, read, and write English fluently

  • 18 years of age or older with a high school diploma or equivalent

  • A citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States*

  • Have served three or fewer terms with AmeriCorps State or National Program

  • Agree to and successfully complete a background check

  • Applicants who have received deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are not eligible to serve as AmeriCorps members at this time.

DUTIES and ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: * Unload trucks according to the prescribed process for the store. * Follow company work processes to receive, open and unpack cartons and totes. * Stock merchandise; rotate and face merchandise on shelves and build merchandise displays. * Restock returned and recovered merchandise. * Order zones and drop shipment categories, following prescribed ordering practices, as assigned by the Store Manager. * Assist in plan-o-gram implementation and maintenance. * Assist customers by locating merchandise. * Bail cardboard and take out trash; dust and mop store floors; clean restroom and stockroom. * Greet customers as they enter the store. * Maintain register countertops and bags; implement register countertop plan-o-grams. * Operate cash register and flatbed scanner to itemize and total customer's purchase; bag merchandise. * Collect payment from customer and make change. * Clean front end of store and help set up sidewalk displays. * Help to maintain a clean, well-organized store and facilitate a safe and secure working and shopping environment. * Provide superior customer service leadership. * Follow company policies and procedures as outlined in the Standard Operating Procedures manual, Employee Handbook, and company communications. * Open and/or close the store under specific direction of the Area Manager. In the Absence of the Store Manager or Assistant Store Manager: * Authorize and sign for refunds and overrides; count register; make bank deposits. * Assist in maintaining strict cashier accountability, key control, and adherence to company security practices and cash control procedures. * Monitor cash levels and make appropriate drawer pulls as directed by the Store Manager. * Monitor cameras for unusual activities (customers and employees), if applicable. * Supply cashiers with change when needed. * Complete all required paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines as assigned.
