Overview

Minnesota Reading Corps and Minnesota Math Corps envision a future in which all Minnesota children will be proficient readers by the end of 3rd grade and proficient in algebra by the end of 8th grade. Our tutors help students build these critical foundational skills through 1-1 or small group tutoring support.

Tutors are trained in conducting progress monitoring assessments and research-based interventions, and will receive ongoing training and coaching support throughout the school year.

Minnesota Reading Corps tutors can choose to work in a preschool setting with 3-5 year olds, or in a 1-1 setting with Kindergarten-3rd graders. Minnesota Math Corps tutors will work with pairs of 4th-8th grade students.

All of our positions are AmeriCorps service member positions, with the AmeriCorps programs Minnesota Reading Corps and Minnesota Math Corps.

Responsibilities

Tutoring

  • Provide intentional and meaningful literacy or math tutoring during all parts of the day to improve the literacy or math skills of children from preschool8th grade.

  • Assess, with high level of accuracy, child outcomes and progress using tri-annual benchmark assessments and ongoing progress monitoring assessments.

  • Identify students who qualify for targeted one-on-one and/or small group tutoring services based on assessment data with direction from the Internal Coach and Master Coach; develop weekly tutoring schedule.

  • Record student and program data completely and accurately in an online database on a weekly basis; maintain confidentiality of all student data.

  • Participate in on-site coaching sessions (includes observation of tutor) two times per month to review student progress, plan, problem-solve, and set goals; act on constructive feedback from coaching sessions.

Communication

  • Communicate with students in an age and developmentally appropriate way.

  • Act on constructive feedback provided by coaches and Program Staff.

  • Build professional relationships and communicate regularly with school/agency staff, Internal Coach, and the Master Coach regarding schedules, literacy strategies, student progress, etc.

Attendance

  • Regular, timely attendance during school hours Monday-Friday, along with before/after school hours as scheduled.

  • Commitment to the entire term(s) of service, including making regular and adequate progress toward the minimum total service hours.

  • Attend all required Reading Corps or Math Corps sponsored training sessions, meetings, and coaching sessions; travel as necessary.

Secondary Functions

  • Perform assignments and/or duties as assigned by Internal Coach, Master Coach, or Program Manager, excluding activities that would displace a staff member.

  • Represent our programs at site-sponsored activities, meetings, (e.g. family night) and other community activities (such as Martin Luther King, Jr. Day). These may include evening and/or weekend hours.

Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years of age or older by your start date.

  • Must have at least a high school diploma or equivalent by your start date.

  • Must be either a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States.

  • Must pass mandatory background checks.

  • Basic computer skills, including the ability to navigate online systems and email.

  • Speak, read, and write English fluently.

  • Ability to be patient and empathetic with students that struggle with literacy or math while adhering to program model.

  • Strong capacity to be flexible and adaptable to varied circumstances and personalities, paired with a conscientious commitment to adhere to the Minnesota Reading Corps and Minnesota Math Corps tutoring model with consistent follow-through.

  • Must be able to build and maintain quality-working relationships with students, coaches, school administrators and Minnesota Reading Corps or Minnesota Math Corps program staff.

  • Willingness to accept and incorporate constructive feedback from coaches and program staff.

  • Ability to adapt to a sometimes challenging and fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to attend and travel to required state and regional training sessions.

  • Strong personal standards of excellence, ethics and integrity.

VIEW JOBS 6/21/2018 12:00:00 AM 2018-09-19T00:00 Overview Position Summary The Kindergarten-Focused Literacy Tutor is placed at an elementary school to provide supplemental practice to children in Kindergarten through third grade to develop their reading skills. The tutor works one-on-one and in small groups with primarily Kindergarten students and secondarily with 1st – 3rd grade students who need help with their pre-reading and reading skills. The tutor will use scripted, evidence-based literacy interventions as guided by their coaches and will conduct assessments to ensure each student is on track to read at grade level. This is an AmeriCorps service member position with the AmeriCorps program, Minnesota Reading Corps. Responsibilities Essential Functions Early Literacy Intervention and Assessment * Conduct one-on-one or small group tutoring sessions with students using scripted, evidence-based literacy interventions provided by Reading Corps; achieve a high degree of fidelity to the scripted interventions. * Assist children in improving their reading skills and abilities to reach grade level expectations. * Develop and maintain a weekly tutoring schedule which maximizes the number of students served and allows for Kindergarten students to receive 20 minutes of small group instruction and 20 minutes of paired or one-on-one instruction each day using early literacy interventions. * Supplement the Kindergarten tutoring schedule by providing daily 20-minute one-on-one tutoring sessions with 1st – 3rd grade students using prescribed literacy interventions. * Assess, with a high level of accuracy, students' continual progress using tri-annual benchmark assessments and ongoing progress monitoring assessments. * Identify students who qualify for Reading Corps tutoring services based on a Reading Corps designed assessment with direction from the Internal Coach and Master Coach. * Provide complete, accurate, and timely documentation of students' weekly progress scores and interventions using an online database; maintain confidentiality of all student data. * Regularly review student data with Internal Coach and Master Coach to gauge the effectiveness of the literacy intervention being used and determine if a change in strategy is necessary. * Participate in coaching sessions (includes observation of tutor); act on constructive feedback from coaching sessions. * Provide opportunities for family literacy involvement for Reading Corps students, including implementing the Reading Corps family engagement literacy interventions – "Read at Home!" and "Talk, Read and Write with Me!" Communication * Communicate and interact with students in an age and developmentally appropriate way. * Communicate regularly and effectively with Internal Coach, Master Coach, Reading Corps staff, and site personnel. Attendance * Demonstrate regular, timely attendance and adherence to hours as scheduled. * Commit to service for the full service term(s), serving the total commitment of hours within the term(s). * Attend all required Reading Corps-sponsored training sessions, meetings, and coaching sessions, travel as necessary.
