Creates and applies scientific theories and laws and engineering methods used within scientific and engineering disciplines to develop or demonstrate new designs, concepts, materials, machines, products, processes, or systems. Uses physical and computational simulation, analysis, and evaluation as inherent activities of development. Plans, conducts, and executes Sandia's science and engineering programs within the spectrum of fundamental research, development, or demonstration.
Designs and develops new electronic and electromechanical components, equipment, systems, and networks. Researches and develops the theory and application of electronics, controls, communications, Instrumentation, computational intelligence, and other electronic components for use in radar and radiation detection equipment, communications equipment and systems, circuitry components, controls and test equipment, Image collection systems, or semiconductors, among others. Researches and develops solid-state integrated circuits, including computers, communications, signal processing, or optoelectronics. Assesses capabilities of existing components, equipment, systems, and networks.
Job Specifications A position exists for a highly motivated, self-starting individual to join the satellite electronics component engineering team. The person selected will support project managers and design engineers in the selection, screening, qualification, and procurement of high reliability electronic components for satellite payloads.
Specifically, component engineers are responsible for the Investigation and qualification of new electronic components for space flight and other high reliability systems; component supplier process evaluations and surveys; development of component specifications; technical support of component procurements; and analysis of failed components. We seek candidates who wish to develop a deeper technical understanding of the physics of electronic components. Component engineers use the Oracle Manufacturing application to plan component requirements and procurement for major systems to ensure the quality, radiation hardness, and compatibility. Candidates must be aware of the declining market for military electronic components and be able to develop new processes to qualify components for satellite applications.
Knowledge, Skills, Ability Advanced technical degree or significant equivalent experience. Technical knowledge and competencies appropriate to the position.
Thorough knowledge of and applied experience with scientific and engineering methods and with the discipline's standards for the ethical conduct of research. Thorough knowledge of and experience with designing, planning, and executing research, design, and development projects. Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with Implementing Sandia policies affecting research, design, and development activities, projects, or initiatives. Demonstrated ability to team across disciplines.
Minimum Qualifications (Required) 1) An advanced degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or related field or equivalent background/experience in electronics technology.
2) Demonstrated flexibility and agility in problem solving.
3) A strong desire to fully understand electronic components, particularly with respect to the challenges of space flight (vibration, acceleration, radiation environments, etc.)
4) A strong customer and teamwork orientation - the successful candidate must integrate into the other thrust areas of the department: production and manufacturing.
5) Willingness to undertake a wide variety of assignments including R&D projects
Preferred Qualifications (Desired) 1) Familiar with industry and military standards for high-reliability electronic components in a space environment.
2) A willingness to drive the general technical understanding of current and future electronics
components to deeper levels, facilitating qualification of new technologies for flight applications.
3) Component engineering or component testing experience.
4) Experience solving parts obsolescence issues.
5) Experience developing new suppliers.
6) Knowledgeable of counterfeit parts mitigation strategies.
7) Knowledge of pre-cap internal visual inspections of hermetically sealed components.
