Job Title: Principal R&D Engineer

Location: Belmont, California

Position Overview: We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Engineer to join our team at the Belmont, California site. This role is pivotal in driving forward our mission of advancing eye care through the development of next-generation products.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and development of components, fixtures, and metrology systems to advance the development of innovative intraocular lens (IOL) and technologies.

  • Develop and implement automated manufacturing processes to streamline the production of Intraocular lenses.

  • Conduct experiments and root cause analysis to address emerging manufacturing or design defects.

  • Collaborate closely with subject matter experts from a cross-functional team of mechanical, optics, manufacturing, and materials scientists to develop new methodologies, materials, or equipment as necessary to meet project milestones for intraocular lens development.

  • Prepare and deliver test protocols, technical reports, presentations, and other relevant documentation for internal and external submissions.

  • Participate in cross-functional R&D activities, serving as a functional representative in various core-team and sub-team project meetings.

  • Establish relationships with suppliers and contract manufacturers, building the capability to support manufacturing scale-up.

Key Qualifications:

  • Extensive experience in leading product development spanning from ideation to pilot line scale-up.

  • Knowledge of performance metrics, statistical analysis, and data mining using SAS, JMP, or Minitab.

  • Strong understanding of Lean Six Sigma principles for problem-solving and process optimization.

  • Self-motivated with the ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced team environment.

  • Expertise in characterizing process capabilities using design of experiments.

  • Background in Design for Manufacturability (DFM) principles and manufacturing automation

  • Experience with equipment qualification (IQ/OQ) and fixtures and tooling design (SolidWorks preferred).

Minimum Requirements:

  • Master's degree with three years of experience or bachelor's degree with five years of experience (Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering)

  • Extensive experience in product development, preferably within the medical device industry.

  • The ability to fluently read, write, understand, and communicate in English

  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.

  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
