About Our Team

The Computational Materials and Data Science department (01864) provides advanced computational analysis that enables materials-based insights and solutions to support the classical materials R&D paradigm of understanding processing-structure-properties-performance relationships. Capabilities include model development for nanoscale-to-mesoscale materials evolution, interfacial dynamics, defect initiation and propagation, and materials-related data analysis. An area of growth for the Dept is the development and application of machine learning, artificial intelligence and data-driven science for new materials discovery. Our multidisciplinary background and materials science expertise enable mechanistic and physical understanding related to aging and wear of materials such as metals, semiconductors, biomaterials, and polymers in support of DOE nuclear and non-nuclear missions. The Department has a computer lab consisting of several Linux and Apple clusters and Sandia provides world-class computing resources, with multiple high-performance computing platforms available for large-scale simulations, visualization, data analysis and storage.

Our materials research program broadly supports the laboratory mission areas, and our sponsors include DOE NNSA, other DOE offices (e.g., DOE Office of Science, BES, BES/CINT, FES, OE, EERE, AMO, etc.), multiple federal agencies, and industry. Additionally, the department pursues partnerships with universities and establishes collaborations with other specialists to use our research while participating in, and contributing to, the international research community. The department's award-winning research portfolio is diverse, providing a dynamic work environment with the opportunity to have broad impact on Sandia missions and international material science directions.

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.
