JOB PURPOSE

  • Lead and develop a high performing, local team, which is the centre of expertise for matters relating to Patent Operations support for a defined group of patent attorneys and patent portfolio.

  • Ensure timely, complete and accurate filing and prosecution of all patent applications and patents in scope.

  • Supervise and perform a diverse range of administrative and legal support services/assistance to patent attorneys under limited supervision by the Global Head of R&D IP Operations.

  • Provide expert knowledge and understanding of IP law and practice issues, both locally and globally

  • Undertake operational and strategic responsibilities to maximise the effectiveness of paralegal support at a local level.

  • Supervise other Operations team members and administrative staff in one R&D IP site.

  • Provide support to other Site Heads on an as needed basis.

  • Manages resources to maximize efficiency and productivity of the team.

MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Supervise Operations team members on site to ensure staff are knowledgeable and proficient in carrying out filing and prosecution procedures accordingly.

  • Manage and coordinate the distribution of workload across the local Operations team to ensure the timely filing and prosecution of patent applications and completion of formalities, without loss of patent or priority rights, in close collaboration with the global patent attorney team in scope.

  • Responsible for setting targets, monitoring workload and performance, conducting performance appraisals, coaching, and developing associates on site to ensure alignment and objectives are met.

  • Responsible for hiring and staffing the Operations team on site.

  • Mentor and develop direct reports according to Novartis Leadership values and behaviours.

  • Analyse patent laws, patent law changes and transitional stipulations and implementation of the relevant changes into the worldwide patent processes. Coordinate on a global basis the documentation and dissemination of pertinent information.

  • Manage the worldwide correspondence with Novartis' local agents independently for patent portfolio in scope.

  • Actively support the global IP attorneys regarding processes, guidelines, services and the fulfilment of formal and legal filing requirements.

  • Ensures that all appropriate documentation is completed in accordance with applicable procedures for each stage of patent filing and prosecution.

  • Responsible for training all new Operations staff on site and dealing with other patents administrative staff to ensure that they are complying with Novartis administrative procedures.

  • Filing and prosecution of US, international, EP and foreign patent applications and related correspondence.

  • Under guidance of Global Head of IP Operations, and in close cooperation and communication with other R&D IP Operations Site Heads, undertake projects to address global patent

Minimum education: Bachelor's degree and paralegal certificate or equivalent experience

Desirable education: Bachelor's degree and paralegal certificate or equivalent experience

Ideal experience: At least 10 years professional experience as a patent paralegal in a patent law firm or corporation with US, European, international and foreign filing experience

Strong managerial/leadership experience
