In this exciting role you will be responsible for product development in Diabetes Consumables R&D. You will be responsible for engineering prototyping, development builds, and engineering study interpretations for infusion sets, reservoirs and therapy aids that support our patients in managing their diabetes. Generate testing protocols, reports and performs data analysis to aid product development decisions and pre-clinical/clinical study design. Conduct verification testing per approved protocols and document in accordance with applicable development regulatory requirements. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with design colleagues to ensure designs are capable of meeting performance targets.

As a R&D Engineer you will partner with material/component suppliers, Manufacturing Engineers, Quality Engineers, to optimize manufacturability, performance, cost and quality. You may also work directly with suppliers to support of manufacturing process trouble shooting & implementation support, manufacturing process capability, and the production part qualification process to meet or exceed project milestones and overall business objectives. You will work under the direction of the Sr. Engineering Manager in a fast-paced collaborative environment supportive of developmental and sustaining program initiatives and compliant with Medtronic best practices.

A Day in the Life

  • Participates in the development, implement and perform qualification of equipment(s) and methods to support new product introduction. Contributes into designing, developing, and implementing of test method and equipment to conduct test on materials, components, and devices to meet development and regulatory requirements.

  • Analyzes, researches, evaluates and characterizes materials and their related fabrication and application processes to evaluate and optimize materials for use in engineering design of applications in components, subassemblies, finished devices. Develops and coordinates the execution of material and process characterizations and qualification plan

  • Provide input by evaluating, analyzing and applying expertise on material properties, design & optimize processing parameter processes and engineering specifications.

  • Generates testing protocols, technical reports, perform data analysis, and create presentations as required to document and communicate results

  • Performs Design of Experiments for process definition and to optimize equipment parameters for new and/or existing processes for combination products.

  • Product design/development responsibilities include documenting requirements of design concepts, evaluating mechanical and material aspects of prototype concepts and development builds.

  • Performs design tests to evaluate and verify designs to specified results, using data obtained to verify the functionality of product design. Support improvement and validation of test methods and equipment.

  • Participates in team discussion to draw conclusions for evaluation, designing product components, troubleshooting and problem solving associated with process and equipment of the design project.

  • Follows written procedures and document variances to written procedures. Generate datasheets for calculation of process parameters. Ensures all experiments comply with safe laboratory practices and standards. Other activities include assisting scientific presentations.

  • Collaborates with Operations teams to develop additional capability for existing technology and process improvements.

  • Collaborates with other departments within Medtronic on development projects including maintenance, qualification and calibration of instruments and equipment.

  • Coordinates with suppliers and external resources needed in developing and implementing new process and/or equipment and tooling. Performs additional lab, engineering, and materials sciences duties as assigned and performs job function in accordance with applicable cGMP environment and ISO standards

  • Checks compliance of technical reports, test data, batch record, equipment and other activities. Enters data into a scientific database or other computer-based program.

  • Designs, develops, analyzes, troubleshoots and provides technical skills during research and/or product development.

  • Designs studies to investigate specific life science questions within field of expertise.

  • May be involved in product research and development and/or clinical trials.

  • Translates research discoveries into usable and marketable products.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Science or related technical field
  • 2+ years of experience in a professional engineering function or academic research and/or development setting

Specialized Knowledge or Skills Required

  • Polymer material science, polymer processing experience; including Injection Molding, Insert Molding, and Multi-Shot Molding.

  • Experience with CAD software

  • Statistical software (Matlab, Minitab)

Nice to Have

  • Degree in Chemical Engineering with emphasis in polymer science and processing.

  • Excellent communication, organizational, presentation and project management skills in a matrix environment.

  • Creative problem solving, drive for results

  • Strong familiarity with statistical analyses, including process capability, process control, Design of Experiments, etc

  • Two years of relevant design, development, manufacturing and/or test experience in insulin infusion medical devices.

  • Knowledge of basic material characterization techniques, including mechanical and analytical.

  • Knowledge and experience in engineering mechanics, mechanical design and material processing.

  • Knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)/Quality System Regulations (QSR).

  • Experience in polymer coating, small molecule control release, and combination products

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks/projects and manage priority accordingly
