As a R&D (Research and development) Engineer, you will help steer the direction of strategic corporate technology by focusing on solving industrial problems through reliable research work. Working as a researcher in R&D projects, you will solve applied research and technology problems and develop ways to more effectively solve them. This position contributes with own ideas to identify, propose and implement innovative technology development and solutions. Solve industrial problems independently.

Your responsibilities

  • Technical/scientific proficiency: Demonstrates solid technical proficiency in own competence area by performing a variety of technology/engineering assignments, mainly in research and development (R&D) projects, which demonstrates independent ability to recognize problems and provide input to solutions

  • Actively follows the scientific discussions in own competence area and contributes independently

  • Understands the key business drivers for ABB in order to make judgments and contribute to results

  • Maintains awareness of state of art technology, as well as ABB products and technologies and identifies and understands technical drivers for R&D projects in own area

  • Understands what creates customer value in own R&D projects and project portfolio of own organization and works to improve operations and increase customer satisfaction according to incoming requests

  • Provides consulting services to business operations and customers

  • Innovation and creativity: Contributes to R&D projects with own, creative ideas. Proposes follow up projects and activities within own technical area based on new ideas

  • Projects, processes and tools: As a solid R&D project member and contributor, with experience as project or sub project leader, ensures alignment with assigned targets (time, cost, quality) and coordinates activities

  • Demonstrates sound understanding of and actively applies, R&D processes and tools

  • Teamwork, collaboration and visibility: Participates in networks in own area, including relevant Engineering networks, in order to further knowledge in targeted area of expertise

  • Participates constructively in working teams. Shares own technical/scientific knowledge in own projects and supports colleagues in applying processes and tools to ensure timely and high quality results

  • Shows solid documentation skills and writes technical reports independently

Your background

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer or Electrical Engineering will be considered with additional years of experience and minimum 5 years of relevant work experience

  • Master's degree in Computer or Electrical Engineering is preferred

  • Occasional domestic and international travel may be required (less than 5 percent)

  • Physical presence at ABB Turbine Automation facility in Pittsburgh, PA is required, but some flexibility in the work arrangement can be implemented

  • Experience with embedded hardware (analog and digital) and embedded software design

  • Experience with C programming language

  • Experience with VHDL programming and design & development of FPGAs and CPLD's

  • Experience with circuit design, schematic entry, and PCB layout

  • Experience using specialized tools for embedded development, such as background debuggers and in circuit emulators

  • Experience with TCP/IP, Profibus, OPC-UA, Modbus and/or other information and automation communication protocols

  • Familiarity with rotating machinery automation applications (servo valve control, vibration monitoring, turbine protection, turbine control, auto-synchronization, etc.)

  • Experience with Distributed Control System (DCS) architectures, functionality and product technologies (controllers, I/O modules, communication modules, etc.)

  • R&D level knowledge of ABB products and technologies associated with Harmony, Symphony Plus or 800xA DCS platforms

  • Experience developing and/or debugging software in assembly language, especially with Motorola, Freescale and NXP microprocessors

  • Experience developing real time applications

  • Basic knowledge of oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, function generators and other common lab electronic equipment

  • Candidates must already have a work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US
