This is a one (1) year 100% Contract position. This appointment may be extended or converted to career status based on the needs of the department.

This position participates in sea-going operations, being at sea from 1 to 4 months per year.

DESCRIPTION

Under direction, independently responsible for sensor integration design, development and assembly of computer-based instrumentation and data acquisition systems for oceanographic research. Develops optical methods and systems for mooring applications. Develops computer and data acquisition software for oceanographic research using Matlab and C. Orchestrates quality control of data acquisition systems. Provides development and design resource and experience in underwater optical sensing technologies. Acquires and analyzes recorded data based on developed experiments. Assists scientists in analysis of scientific data including software design, data retrieval and data preparation/presentation. Arranges and participates in at-sea and field experiments and engineering tests. Participates in sea-going operations, being at sea from 1 to 4 months per year.

Uses professional engineering concepts to perform moderately complex engineering assignments. Works in a specialized engineering field on a major training and / or research effort. Works on assignments of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • B.S. degree in Engineering or related scientific field and three (3) years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Advanced proficiency in the use of MATLAB based oceanographic data analysis software. Other computer skills necessary are an understanding of operating systems including UNIX, MS-DOS, Windows and Mac OS and UNIX based computer systems.

  • Experience with Matlab is essential.

  • Working knowledge of engineering principles and methods in order to independently perform professional engineering design work of limited scope and complexity.

  • Working knowledge necessary to begin independent application of principles, practices and procedures in the completion of assignments. Competence in developing integrated moored oceanographic sensor systems.

  • Proven experience to perform crucial engineering tasks under stressful and difficult environmental conditions (e.g., at sea).

  • Experience at developing optical ocean observing systems.

  • Experience with design and programming of data acquisition systems.

  • Experience with assembly of moored oceanographic hardware.

  • Knowledge of radiative transfer models.

  • Electro-mechanical assembly skills.

  • Practical experience on board ships of various displacements; including typical shipboard operations- mooring operations, underway operations, loading and unloading and processing cruises.

  • Organizational abilities and decision-making to prioritize work assignments.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills. Experience to communicate and interact productively with scientific, technical, and administrative personnel.

  • Ability to work in a collaborative manner, to assist in identifying any challenges or barriers.

  • Experience to accurately convey project plans and to coordinate testing and implementation of systems. Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Maintain knowledge on current mooring technological issues.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Passport required for seagoing operations and travel to foreign ports.

  • Must have access to reliable transportation and/or a valid drivers license to operate university vehicle.

  • Ability to obtain forklift driver certification, 4500 pound rating minimum.

  • May spend from one to four months at sea each year in remote locations and under adverse weather conditions.

  • Able to lift and carry 75 pounds.

  • Background check is required.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $74,300 - $134,500 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $35.58 - $64.42

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
