Job Description:

The successful candidate must be flexible and collaborative, and possess a strong team orientation. He or she must have exceptional communication skills, and be prepared to advise the business on contracting risks, interpretation, and management of contractual relationships. A scientific background, particularly in biology or biochemistry, would be especially helpful in being able to handle a large and varied portfolio of contracts.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Draft, review, and edit a high volume, and wide variety of research-oriented contracts with academic institutions, for-profit collaborators, and vendors

  • Advise internal business clients on contractual issues as they arise

  • Work collaboratively with other areas of the legal department (e.g., IP , litigation counsel) as necessary

  • Assist in training non-legal contract managers in the R&D organization


  • 8+ years' experience with transactional contracting

  • Ideally candidate will have both in-house and law firm experience


  • JD degree required

  • Bachelor's Degree in a science is preferred

This role can be based at the corporate headquarters in Thousand Oaks, California or Amgen's research sites in South San Francisco, California or Cambridge, Massachusetts. The strong preference is for the role to be based in Thousand Oaks. The Senior Counsel will develop, implement and execute a global intellectual property strategy for Amgen's therapeutic products and product candidates (e.g., antibodies, siRNAs, dual targeting molecules, immunotherapeutics, or cell-based therapies), including formulations, process development or manufacturing methods relating to Amgen's pipeline and in-line products. Responsibilities will include: identifying patentable subject matter; drafting, filing and prosecuting patent applications worldwide; conducting prior art searches; analyzing patents and preparing freedom-to-operate opinions; conducting due diligence in support of licensing activities; negotiating and drafting research agreements; analyzing trademark and copyright issues; providing legal advice and counsel to R&D and business personnel on a variety of IP related matters; assisting with litigation-related matters and challenging/defending patents in PTAB, opposition, and other forums. The Senior Counsel will work individually and in legal teams and on cross-functional R&D and business teams across various geographies. Basic Qualifications: J.D. degree or LL.M. degree from an ABA accredited law school, admission to practice law in a U.S. jurisdiction and four (4) years of experience practicing intellectual property law AND Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Preferred Qualifications: Ten or more years of experience practicing patent or intellectual property law Experience in all aspects of U.S. and foreign intellectual property law relating to biotechnology at a law firm or biotechnology/pharmaceutical corporation An advanced degree such as a Master's or Ph.D. in molecular biology, cell biology, microbiology, biochemistry, genetics, immunology, or structural biology Excellent analytic, legal drafting and oral and written communication skills Strong management and leadership skills as well as a strong client service focus and the ability to work independently and in teams; ability to work efficiently, to prioritize workflow, to meet demanding deadlines, and to manage multi-dimensional projects in a fast-paced environment Amgen is committed to unlocking the potential for patients suffering from serious illnesses by discovering, developing, manufacturing and delivering innovative human therapeutics.
