Responsibilities

Assists specialists in carrying out rangeland management support projects. Checks range allotments to assess appropriate time to graze, compliance with management plans and operating instructions, number of livestock, herding procedures, salting, range improvement, maintenance, and the need for additional range improvements such as fences or water development.

Inspects allotments before and after grazing for trespass stock and if found, gathers necessary brands, numbers, dates, and locations. Reports non-compliance or other management needs to the supervisor.

Performs a variety of computations and assessment of standard rangeland management data to prepare the data for interpretative use of inclusion in reports. Prepares charts, graphs, and/or reports using well-established specified procedures. Notes and reports on conditions such as range utilization, grazing impact, soil erosion, violations, or needed maintenance.

Performs rangeland management support work. Makes a number of measurements using a variety of instruments.

Performs computations that require judgment and knowledge of the nature of the sources and use of the data. Estimates production and potential production of a site based on various sampling techniques. Estimates the utilization of available forage by all grazing animals and determines as closely as possible the percent of use by each class of animal. Using accepted indicator plants determines range readiness and advises supervisor.

Participates in noxious plant control, seeding, or similar projects by flagging boundaries, operating equipment, and carrying out kill studies. Identifies plant specimens in the field and collects and prepares specimens.

Identifies plants and noxious weeds and determines how they grow. Applies the proper chemicals to control noxious weeds.

Serves as a crew member or leader on range improvement construction and revegetation projects that include construction of fences, cattle guards, water developments, repairing fences, prescribed burning, seeding and fertilizing.

Learns to select and measure transects by working with a higher grade employee. Counts plants, measures distances, observes plant and soil conditions, and records data.

Transfers data from field notes to maps or aerial photos to show vegetative types, conditions and trends, and soil types. Compiles data for use in plans and records.

Qualifications

You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below to be considered eligible for this position. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Your application or resume must clearly show that you possess the appropriate experience requirements.

GS-04: (6) Six months of general experience and (6) Six months of specialized experience equivalent to at least a GS-03 grade level.

General Experience is defined as: Performed farm/ranch labor, such as feeding and tending livestock or general maintenance of farm/ranch facilities; Cleaned tools and equipment; Worked in a greenhouse or nursery moving, watering, and tending plants and performing other general labor; Worked on a landscape or construction crew; Other work experience, paid or unpaid, that demonstrates an ability to learn and perform the work of this position.

Specialized experience is defined as: Work in the conservation, regulation, and use of public or federally controlled lands for grazing.

Range research activities. Work in the operation of a livestock ranch or in assisting in the management or preservation of lands comparable to the public range. Range or forest fire control, prevention, or suppression work.-OR

Successful completion of 2 years of study above high school that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 3 semester hours in mathematics is creditable.

The primary purpose of the position is wildland fire suppression/management/control, as a firefighter on an engine, hotshot, helitack or hand crew. Learn more about this agency Responsibilities Performs one or more of the following major blocks of duties in excess of 50% of the time: Serves as a senior firefighter on a handcrew. May perform the duties of a fully qualified faller, saw repair technician, or certified in the use of long line. May on occasion serve as driver of crew carrier. All drivers of crew carriers are required to meet state Department of Transportation licensing requirements. This license must be obtained prior to being assigned driver duties. Driver is subject the requirements of the Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing program. Serves as a senior firefighter on a Fire Engine. Serves as alternate to the Assistant Fire Engine Operator. May assist in performing work of starting pump engine, priming pump, adjusting engine speed and pump valves, laying hose, and using appropriate nozzles and nozzle adjustment in effective use of water and additives. Firefighter may have specialized duties such as water handling specialist, fully qualified faller, or responsible for maintenance of specialized equipment used to respond to wildland urban interface/intermix situations. May on occasion serve as alternate driver which requires a commercial drivers license. This license must be obtained prior to being assigned alternate driver duties. Driver is subject to the requirements of the Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing program. Serves as a senior firefighter on a helitack crew. Loads helicopter cargo considering methods, weight distribution, necessity for securing, total weight, etc, and completes manifests of personnel and equipment being transported to the fire or other work site. While on the fireline, employee will supress the fire by moving dirt, chopping brush, felling small trees, to build fire line using hand tools such as axe, Pulaski, shovel and McLeod, and power saws, to control spreading wildland fire until relieved or fire is suppressed. May perform various aviation and ground support activities, such as servicing and operating batch mixers, tanks, and related components including pumps, valves, and hoses. May be required to fill-in for other work leaders on established crews who are absent. Leads a squad (3-5) firefighters on a module in performing suppression duties on small or large fires. As work leader is responsible for showing new employees how the work is performed, for implementing quantity and quality goals on-the-job, for assuring that equipment and tools are available, and that work is performed in a safe manner. When not performing fire suppression duties, may inventory fuel beds, prepare associated reports, monitor burning conditions, pile logging debris and act in assigned positions such as lighting boss or other designated positions during actual fuel reduction efforts by prescribed fire. May perform project work and lead other workers in the same type of work which may include, but is not limited to: cleaning outdoor recreational facilities; mows grass and trims shrubs; perform trail maintenance and building maintenance duties; marks trees for timber harvesting in accordance with designated plan, checks seedling survival, and so forth.
