Position Summary

This position conducts comprehensive technical field inspections, safety audits, and investigations to ensure compliance with Wisconsin Statues and Administrative code, railroad signal design standards, and traffic control standards for the protection of public highway users, railroad employees, and property owners. This position prepares reports on their investigations which include identifying violations and corrective actions, and making recommendations for public safety improvement including railroad safety and/or highway construction projects. Additionally, this position prepares drafts of legal orders based on these investigations, manages the statewide railroad crossing database, and reviews and recommends for approval railroad circuitry and signal plans.

Salary Information

The starting hourly salary for the Railroad Safety Analyst Senior (05-14) is $25.76. Pay will be determined based on qualifications.

A twelve month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan.

The Office of Commissioner of Railroads is a registered participant in the federal work authorization program commonly known as E-Verify to verify employment eligibility of all employees hired on or after June 18, 2015.

The Office of Commissioner of Railroads is unable to sponsor work visas for new hires. Any appointment made will be contingent on the applicant being able to prove valid status to work in the United States.

Certain positions within this Department may allow remote/work from home flexibility for a portion of their work schedule, depending on the needs of the position and the work unit. This topic and any remote work flexibility that may be available will be discussed in more detail in the interview process.

For permanent positions that allow remote work flexibility, Wisconsin residency is not required. However, it is not anticipated that working outside of Wisconsin (or bordering cities) will be allowed because positions may at times need to report to office locations in Wisconsin on short notice.

This position requires extensive travel throughout the State of Wisconsin including five or more overnight trips per month.

Qualifications

Qualified applicants will have experience with all the following:

  • Experience performing basic steps within an investigation, developing recommendations upon facts found in an investigation or inspection.

  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite, or a similar product, to complete tasks such as report writing, data analysis, data entry, email, or utilizing and organizing through the calendar function

  • Experience interpreting and applying standards, statutes, policy, legal orders, or rules.

  • Experience working with regulatory issues and resolving areas of noncompliance with diverse parties.
