POSITION SUMMARY
Under supervision, performs rail equipment design projects involving the specifying, review, oversight and testing of equipment, vehicles and installations of equipment.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides input to new rail car and rail car rehab projects; to insure all the various areas needed in the projects are included and adequately covered; by reviewing specifications and preparing comments, by attending meetings and preparing summaries.
Provides oversight on major rail vehicle equipment installations and testing; to provide information to all involved departments and suppliers; by monitoring equipment installations, witnessing testing and preparing reports.
Provides support and assistance in resolving engineering problems; to insure projects run smoothly and equipment operates properly; by coordinating activities with shops and terminals, meeting with shop and terminal personnel and supplier personnel, conducting tests, analyzing data and test reports and making recommendations and preparing reports.
Represents CTA to provide assistance in design or manufacturing problem resolution to insure CTA's needs and specifications are followed; visits plants to investigate problems, attends meetings with suppliers, supplies added information and conducts tests.
Performs related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Required to possess a high school diploma.
Required to possess a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering.
Required to possess or obtain current Rail Safety Training certification.
Required to have a valid Illinois driver's license and be authorized to use personal vehicle for CTA business.
Hands-on experience with instruments, tools and troubleshooting techniques preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Ability to read and understand technical drawings and documents.
Strong computer skills on word processing and spread sheet programs.
Good computer drafting skills (CAD).
Ability to write and express oneself in clear, logical and comprehensible English.
General knowledge of rail cars, equipment and subsystems.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Usual business office, manufacturing plant, maintenance shop facility, and testing laboratory.
Exposed to 600 volt third rails and energized equipment.
Must be available to respond to calls or email inquiries outside of regular work hours. Typically, on call one week, approximately every 6 weeks on a rotating schedule.
Occasionally exposed to usual rail vehicle maintenance shop and terminal hazards and conditions, e.g. vehicular noise, dust, grease, moving vehicles, electrified apparatus, or machinery, etc.
Occasionally exposed to all weather and right of way conditions.
EQUIPMENT, TOOLS, AND MATERIALS UTILIZED
Computer with general business and equipment specific software.
Various pieces of testing equipment both electronic and mechanical.
Car Repairer hand and power tools.
