Summary of Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

Performs direct patient care in a compassionate and timely manner and applies the art and skill of diagnostic imaging through the safe and effective use of radiologic technology.

Essential Job Functions

  • Demonstrates knowledge of direct patient care by evaluating the patient, verifying patient ID, and related information to assure appropriate procedure is performed; explains procedure to patient; prepares patient for procedure by obtaining and recording patient history and consent form (if applicable); ensures patient comfort, privacy, and safety during procedure; monitors condition of patient and medical equipment that may be disturbed due to the nature of exam and report changes to patient care services.

  • Properly positions patient to perform routine diagnostic radiographs; calculates and selects proper technical factors based on information such as age, medical history and suspected pathology; assesses quality of radiographs with minimal supervision; competently performs in assigned areas that encompass specialty procedures e.g.: surgery, C-arm, tomograms, venograms, arthrograms, myelograms, ERCP, sialograms, video speech evaluation, hysterosalpingogram and other specialty procedures as well as GI and GU procedures; maintains acceptable exam repeat rate; assists physicians in performance of fluoroscopic and minor specialty exams by providing and administrating proper contrast media, positioning patient and operating fluoroscopic equipment; performs IV injections and has knowledge of use and care of existing IV's; identifies all images with appropriate lead markers and patient name; provides proper radiation protection for patients, self and others (uses lead aprons, lead gloves, and gonadal shielding when appropriate).

  • Participates in performance improvement projects and performs quality control testing as required by department; assists department in achieving successful results in all federal, state, and local agency audits.

  • Participates in the education/instruction of students and the orientation of new staff.

As a member of the patient care team the PP-MA is trained in performing a wide range of skilled administrative and clinical duties. The PP-MA performs a variety of age specific duties in providing direct outpatient care. All clinical care is done under the direction and supervision of a physician, mid-level provider and/or RN who has determined appropriate tasks for delegation. The PP-MA makes observations as directed by the physician and/or RN and reports deviations. EDUCATION: * Graduate of an accredited medial assistant program, preferred. * Certification as a Medical Assistant, preferred. * CPR certification, required. EXPERIENCE: * Experience providing administrative duties and clinical care in a physician practice or ambulatory clinic setting, preferred. * Computer literacy, required. PRINCIPAL JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES: * Receives patient from the waiting room and escorts the patient to the exam room. * Obtains and records vital signs, height and weight, chief complaint, medication and allergies in the patient medical record. * Records medical, surgical and family history in the patient medical record. * Reviews MyChart with the patient and registers them upon patient approval. * Enters the patient's pharmacy into the patient medical record. * Enters the patient's care team information (i.e. PCP, referring physician, specialists, etc…). * Schedules tests as directed by the physician or mid-level provider. * Records patient critical lab values, adverse reactions and pertinent information and promptly reports to the physician and/or RN. * Prepares patient and assists the physician with set up and clean up of procedures (i.e. pap smear, biopsy, etc…) as per protocols. * Anticipates patient and caregivers requests and needs and responds in a timely manner. * Collects and records quality assurance data on equipment (i.e. pulse oximeter, refrigerator, emergency cart, etc…) according to protocols. * Observes universal precautions and aseptic techniques with patient and the proper use of medical instruments and equipment. * Performs and safely operates all medical equipment according to the manufacturers' instructions and protocols. * Performs computer order entry and scheduling functions in appropriate systems (i.e. Star, CarePATH, etc…). * Able to perform administrative duties (i.e. scheduling, registration, insurance authorization, answering phone, etc…). * Acts as a liaison and support person for the patient and caregivers. * Assists with patient education and discharge instructions in conjunction with the physician and/or RN. * Inventories exam rooms and determines supply needs. Family Health Center, Austintown Family Health Care and Geriatrics Assessment Center * Performs CLIA waived testing per manufacturer directions and protocols. * Performs urine analysis, urine pregnancy, finger stick glucose, PT/INR, hematocrits, hemocults, quick view flu and Strep A testing. * Assists the physicians and/or mid-level providers with Nitrazine testing * Applies and removes cardiac holter monitors. * Performs pulmonary function, peak flow and pulse oximetry oxygen saturation testing. * Administers pulmonary nebulizer treatments. * Performs ear irrigations. * Has knowledge and competent skills to perform infant, child, adolescent and adult immunizations and simple injections and intra dermal injections. * Administers TD, flu, pneumovax, insulin, PPD and all infant and childhood immunizations. * Assists patient and physician provider with prescription assistant application and medication receiving process (i.e. logging of medication, printing patient education information from web site, etc…). * Maintains the Dental Van schedule (i.e. scheduling, rescheduling or cancelling appointments). * Schedules and follows-up referrals and contacts no-show patients as directed by the nurse or physician provider. * Obtains ABNs for services that may not be reimbursable by Medicare prior to ordering ancillary tests and services, on an as needed basis. Austintown Family Health Center Lead Medical Assistant Serves as a clinical expert for the practice Demonstrates clinical expertise in the care of the assigned patient specialty and is recognized as a resource in practice specialty by physicians and staff. Provides orientation for new staff that is planned and consistent. Maintains and develops clinical knowledge through participation in continuing education programs. Consistently follows through and implements actions. Actively participates and planning monthly staff meeting.
